'Sharknado' third airing gets more viewers than the first two

By Tony Maglio

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The "Sharknado" storm continues to build: the third time proved to be the charm for the made-for-TV movie about a tornado full o' sharks over the weekend with 2.1 million.

In fact, Saturday night's third airing of "Sharknado" was the most-watched original movie encore in Syfy history.

The movie aired during an all-day "Sharkathon" festival which also featured "Sharktopus," "Two-Headed Shark Attack" and "Swamp Shark."

The encore telecast earned 1.9 million viewers, which was 500,000 more than its premiere. But this is not the end for the little movie with big sharks in an even bigger storm.

On Friday, there will be a special midnight screening of "Sharknado" in more than 200 select theaters nationwide. "Sharknado" will have its final airing of the summer on August 22, leading into the premiere of Original Movie "Ghost Shark."

"Sharknado 2" will hit New York City in July 2014 on Syfy.

Mayor denounces state reduction in CTA funding as ?wrong-headed?

Updated: July 31, 2013 2:19AM

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday denounced as ?wrong-headed? a reduction in the state subsidy for reduced fares that will cost the CTA $14 million in sorely needed annual funding.

Emanuel and CTA President Forrest Claypool ruled out another round of fare hikes or service cuts. They simply vowed to lobby the Illinois General Assembly to restore the $14 million subsidy during the fall veto session.

?There are mandates from the state as it relates to providing discounted or free rides and yet, the resources ? $14 million ? was cut,? the mayor told a news conference at a CTA bus garage called to tout a $10 million crackdown on absenteeism.

?I would not call it unfortunate. I would call it wrong-headed?.When you have these mandates which are right, the state should not be making cuts in providing the resources?I would hope the state would step up and play a productive role in fulfilling their obligation to the CTA.?

Claypool noted that the $14 million reduction comes on top of ?annual additional burdens? from Springfield tied to 2008 legislation governing CTA pension funds and the agency health care trust.

?We have to absorb those blows every year as well,? he said.

Even before the $14 million cut, the state subsidy covered ?only a fraction? of the $100 million cost of providing discounted and free rides. Now, it?s ?half of what it was? a year ago, he said.

?We?re asking Springfield for recognition. Don?t make our lives worse. We?re not asking you to bail us out or anything like maybe in the past. But please don?t make the problem worse,? the CTA president said.

When Claypool was asked whether a fare hike or service cuts would be needed to absorb the $14 million cut, Emanuel answered for him.

?No,? the mayor said.

Afterwards, Claypool repeated the company line.

Asked how he would make up the $14 million difference, the CTA president said, ?We just have to do the best we can?..We work hard every day to cut our costs and bring in revenue outside the system. Higher advertising. More concessions. Reduce our costs to things like supply chain and absenteeism.?

Although Emanuel and Gov. Pat Quinn have had their differences, the mayor has an ally in Quinn when it comes to restoring the $14 million subsidy.

The governor?s assistant budget director Abdon Pallasch noted that Quinn ?supported state funding for senior fares? with a $34 million line item in his state budget. The General Assembly cut it in half ? to $17 million, all but $3 million for the CTA.

White House church building a new home for family, and giving new hope--Mikayla Lewis

WHITE HOUSE, Tenn.--Revolution Church spent the month of July working on Serve the City.? The congregation is doing various community service projects and their final one is Project Restoration. It is an extreme home makeover for the TC and Matt Bush.

The Bush family lost four children in the last six years. The couple has been married for more than a decade, and lost their first son Wayne in 2006. Wayne was stillborn. They miscarried their daughter, Serenity later that year.

The Bush's 3-year-old son, Casey drowned in their pool while in the care of a family-friend in April 2011.

The couple's fourth child, Angel? was miscarried last summer right before they discovered black mold in their Cottontown house.

Pastor Joe Everette said, " They've had a string of tragedies that I can't do nothing to fix, but this I can fix."

Revolution executive pastor Joe Everette is also a general contractor. He and the congregation decided to fix the Bush's home . TC and Matt Bush were living in their garage, due to mold infestation. The couple worked on the damage when they could afford it, and when they were not volunteering at the church.

Pastor Everette said the couple never once asked for help, but 100 volunteers turned out this weekend to help restore the house.?

"That's what? Project Restoration is about...we're restoring this house, so that the family can be restored."

? TC and Matt Bush said, " Thank you is not enough. It's amazing to be surrounded by people that just want to help."

Tune into Fox 17 next weekend for the final unveiling of the Bush's home.

6 Cornerbacks Who Could Become Breakouts Stars in the 2013 NFL Season

As the NFL season approaches, I?m looking at the rising stars in each position. Rather than focusing on rookies (which I?ve already done) or rehashing familiar stories about veterans and established stars, I?m turning my attention to players for whom 2013 might be their best season ever.

Here are 6 cornerbacks to watch out for this season:

Brandon Boykin (Philadelphia Eagles)
It?s hard to imagine a more versatile cornerback than Boykin. While he doesn?t rack up the tackling stats that some others do, he?s indispensable on special teams as a kickoff returner. His ability to switch back and forth between these two roles, and to contribute consistently in both, is a rare gift. Because he relies on quickness and not on bulk, he?ll improve dramatically as he masters the rhythms of the NFL. If he?s allowed to take some chances this year, in his second pro season, he?ll shine.

Ron Brooks (Buffalo Bills)
Brooks is the longest long shot on my list, and he?s here for one main reason. In a single game against Jacksonville last year ? a game in which the then-rookie didn?t start ? he recorded ten tackles and three blocked passes, many of them while enduring an mid-game injury. One amazing game doesn?t make a star, but Brooks has other things going for him, especially the fact that he played quarterback in high school, which has given him an instinct for where passes and receivers are going to travel. If the Bills give him the opportunity to develop, he could have a breakout season.

Nolan Carroll (Miami Dolphins)
Carroll is most familiar as the guy who got intentionally tripped on the sidelines by a Jets coach, but it?s time to start recognizing him as one of the quickest-thinking cornerbacks in the NFL. While he?s not as hard of a hitter as others in the position, his speed and his ability to read an offense help him take opponents by surprise. The Dolphins promoted him to a starting role last season, and he excelled so much that they?ll almost certainly keep him there.

Janoris Jenkins (St. Louis Rams)
It?s hard to believe this is only Jenkins?s second season in the NFL, because he already talks and plays like a veteran. He?s stepped up as a leader on the Rams? defense, mentoring rookies and admirably setting aside past struggles with the law. As cornerbacks go, he?s the perfect package: he?s a reliable tackler and a showstopping pass defender. This season, it?s unlikely he?ll score two touchdowns in the same game like he did against Arizona, but he?ll probably bring a more well-rounded game and contribute more to the Rams in between highlight reel appearances.

Captain Munnerlyn (Carolina Panthers)
A short, swift fireplug of a player, Munnerlyn returned from injuries to own the left cornerback position for the Panthers last season. He?s benefited hugely from the consistency of four seasons in Carolina. He might get lost on another team, but the Panthers recognize his talent for defending passes. He scored two spectacular touchdowns off of interceptions last season. It?s such a delight to see him pick off a pass and run, and we?ll likely get to watch him do it a few times this year.

Sean Smith (Kansas City Chiefs)
Smith is one of the many reasons why the Chiefs are shaping up to become one of the most formidable teams in the NFL this year. When Kansas City lured him away from Miami with a sweet contract, the wisdom looked questionable, but I think Smith is a better fit for the Chiefs than the Dolphins. He?s a big, athletic player, the kind who can knock an unsuspecting wide receiver down with his little finger. And what some people call inconsistency, I see as the potential for making huge plays, especially on a team where his body type and catching ability are unique among cornerbacks.

Wife goes into labor, Mahan withdraws from tourny

OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) ? Hunter Mahan has withdrawn from the RBC Canadian Open after his wife went into labor.

Mahan was the tournament leader at 13 under after 36 holes and had yet to tee off for the third round Saturday.

Mahan took the lead Friday with an 8-under 64 to improve on his 5-under 67 from the first round.

His sudden departure now puts the spotlight on John Merrick, who finished the second round two strokes back of Mahan after tying the course record with a 62 at Glen Abbey Golf Course. Merrick will play alone.

Mahan's start time had initially been set for 1:30 p.m. ET before play was suspended for 80 minutes by weather. He had been rescheduled to tee off at 2:50 but never made it to the course.
