christine's cottage garden home: Faith Family Friends sign

I've been making these wood signs lately and I decided to make myself one. Usually they are only 12 inches long but I wanted to make a longer one to go under a shelf in my office. I LOVE the way it turned out! I'll show you how I did it. SO EASY..
First, find yourself a piece of wood, mine is 6" x 40"
Any scrap piece will do, mine was from an old deck we took apart. Paint it black or white or whatever background color you would like. I did mine black and I only paint where the paper would not be.
Then find some pretty scrapbook paper and head to your computer. I used Word to print the words Faith Family and Friends. You might have to play around a little to get it just right, and remember to leave at least a?1 inch border. I also had to print each word on a seperate piece of paper.?

??

Then I used my favorite stamp and added black to the corners and around the edges.

I used mod podge to glue the paper down. Then I went to my favorite little machine - the Cricut! I cut?seven 3"curly shapes.
I added some black ink to the curly shapes to give?them more depth and then glued them in place
A sweet little silver heart glued between the words and I put upholstery tacks in the corners but the picture didn't show them very well

Since I wasn't going to hang it on the wall but off the bottom of the shelf, I used cup hooks and eye screws. I attached the hooks to the underneath of the shelf and the eyes to the top of my sign. A little tip - put a dab of toothpaste on the eyes and then touch it to the shelf, it leaves a mark exactly where you need to screw in the cup hooks.
This is the before...
And here's the after...
What do you think?

I LOVE it!

Family Recipe Scrapbook Tips ? globaldailychronicle.com

It?s family reunion time again throughout the United States and Canada. I could just taste my mom?s peach pie already. I can not tell you offer I?ve called my mom and said ?mom I recently have to have your recipe on your pie and handmade ice-cream?. It?s been a pokey accumulation of recipes over time, but she relents every time I make a call for yet another recipe from her.

A lot of the recipe?s are actually from my grandmother who passed them on before she deceased many years ago. You know, I can still remember baking oatmeal raisin cookies with my grandmother although it?s been almost 35 years now since I last had that chance.

Given that I have an adult son and daughter of my very own my wife and I, who both desire to cook, really wanted to pass the recipes to both of them also. A number of these recipes they were raised on yet again they have kids of their own, are just start to request. My cousin also has a recipe book from her grandmother on her dad?s side. It?s too old and tattered now to apply regularly, therefore it is time it was restored and updated.

A lot of wonderful memories through the kitchen? products that I?ve lost eventually.

I wish that the idea of a recipe scrapbook ended up around after i was just a baby.

Recipe scrapbooks can be given to brothers, daughters, cousins, children or maybe about anyone. An 8.5?11 scrapbook works perfectly with the US and Canada and may be printed on any standard printer. They are large enough to hang a 3?5 index card, a number of photos plus the journaled memories you create. Also you can use an 8?8 scrapbook and find the recipes bound inside of a square format.

I do think it?s a great mix to combine your photos and recipes. Digital scrapbook templates are great for this. For example, combine an organization family photo out of your reunion at the outset of the album that has a signature page from everybody in the photograph. This is the great way to start off the album ahead of the index page. If you have asked for recipes from all of the the family members there, put a picture of the recipe submitter on that recipe page when using the recipe for the opposite page. I really like to put a graphic and a lined journaling page for memories on the left with the recipe, instructions and photo in the finished item or of your cooking fun for the right.

Here?s an execllent tip I selected from my wife?s sister? help your reader out having a shopping list in the bottoom of each recipe or about the back on the recipe cards that you apply. You might also be considering putting the very recipe one scrapbook recipe book page and placing the shopping lists separately from the back or at the conclusion of each section.

Note: Utilizing the recipe cards is incredible so that you can take them off and bring them right along towards the market? my personal experience have shown that cards go missing from time to time. Additionally, they add bulk about the is already a bulky cookbook scrapbook. I have found that having the list printed at the end of each page makes it simplallows you to copy down as required and much easier to combine common ingredients for multiple dishes.

Another family recipe scrapbook tip is to create a chunk of history together with your recipes. If adding recipe?s passed down for generations or from your family member that?s no longer living, you ought to have the photo?s over the left, the recipe on the right page, in addition to a bit more of history information on the author with a 3rd page with all the more photographs. Most scrapbooks are quite expandable, particularly the digital scrapbooks, so there may be room for many people pages in just one album.

If necessary, break the family recipe scrapbook into volumes by food type or sides within the family tree.

Virtually all cookbooks read more here possess a measurement chart and conversion table with them, so when coming up with a recipe scrapbook album, it?s a wise decision to add this review to either click here the back or the front index.

Tornado Rips Building; 150 Live to Tell the Story

About 150 employees at Parsons Manufacturing Co. in Illinois were stunned to watch their company?s building became into a pile of mangled steel beams & else rubble as an F-4 tornado ripped through the area. But what is even more shocking is that they were inside the building when the storm hit.

Thanks to reinforced strong masonry shelters, all 150 folks walked distant from the disaster without a scratch. An F-4 tornado has wind speeds from 207 to 260 mph.

Winds from the storm leveled the 225,000-square-foot plant & destroyed at least half a dozen houses nearby.

?We were stated over a common address system to head to the three restrooms, which are made of reinforced strong masonry & assist as storm shelters. When we got to the shelters, we might watch steel beams & machinery aviating in the air,? recalled Dave McClallen, a Parsons employee.

Woodford County Emergency Services & Disaster Agency volunteer Dustin Oltman stated articles indicated that the storm inflicted the most harm on the half-mile region in Roanoke, Ill., wherever Parsons Manufacturing Co. is located.

Bob Parsons, possessor of Parsons Manufacturing, which makes parts for the building & mining industries, did not need to take any chances when building his surgery after a near overlook of his premier job by a tornado in 1972. When he constructed an enlarged job crosswise the street, he enclosed reinforced strong masonry storm shelters inside. He stated that he never might have guessed that decisiveness would save 150 lives thirty years later.

?The storm shelters were so important. They saved all of our lives,? stated Craig Joraanstad, the company?s human resources manager. ?The most significant thing we hope happens out of this is that more businesses take storm shelters seriously. Concrete masonry protects lives & belongings ? 150 folks are alive nowadays thanks to those strong masonry storm shelters.?

The inherent strength of reinforced strong masonry makes it an fantabulous option to withstand wind-borne debris ? the biggest threat to occupants in these storms, stated Dennis Graber, an technologist on the faculty of the National Concrete Masonry Association in Herndon, Va.

?Researchers at the Wind Science & Engineering Research Center at Texas Tech University exhibited this truth at a wind projectile test in September 2003,? Graber said. ?In that test, strong grouted 8- & 6-inch reinforced strong masonry wall panels withstood the standardized FEMA [Federal Emergency Management Agency] test of 15-pound, 2 by 4 projectiles shot at 100 mph, which is congressman of debris in a 250-mph tornado.?

Pinwheel Becomes Findery After Legal Injunction - NYTimes.com

What a difference a single letter can make.

Two start-ups?have?been caught in a?legal battle?over the name Pinweel and Pinwheel since late February. The?subtle?difference: the letter ?h.?

Pinweel, the one without the h, is a photo-sharing app co-founded by Richard Bulman. The other, with an h, is a location-based note-sharing application that was started by Caterina Fake, best known as the co-founder of Flickr.

It seems the fight is over, for now. Pinweel was granted a preliminary injunction against Pinwheel this week by the United States?District Court?of New York.

In a blog post published?Friday on 2bkco the Web site, the parent company of Ms. Fake?s start-up, she said had decided to change the name of the location-based notes app to Findery.

?Because of?a name conflict?in the United States, today we are changing our name to Findery,? Ms. Fake wrote, noting that ?the service will remain the same ? finding and leaving notes around the world.?

2bkco still owns foreign rights, in both Europe and Asia, to the name Pinwheel.

Pinweel has managed to use the dispute to get attention for its site. When Pinweel opened for business earlier this year, the company used the naming difference in a pitch to reporters and blogger with a headline that said: ?Caterina Fake?s Pinwheel vs Pinweel.?

Then Pinweel doubled-back on itself, telling?Anthony Ha of the TechCrunch blog that the name similarity did not matter.

?We didn?t think it was necessary for us to spend a lot of money to purchase Pinwheel.com because we were really confident that we could successfully establish ?Pinweel?, without the ?h?, as a memorable brand that?s known for being the best way to share photos,? the company told Mr. Ha.

It seems that plan didn?t work out.

Two new protected marine areas

Two new areas of marine protection off the coastline of Northern Ireland have been announced.

The Special Areas of Conservation include the sea and seabed surrounding the Maidens Islands off Larne and those adjacent to the Portrush Skerries and Giant's Causeway.

The move also provides protection for the harbour porpoise.

Environment Minister Alex Attwood said the sites were important for their "marine habitats and biodiversity".

He added: "They demonstrate my department's ongoing commitment to protecting our seas and the wildlife and ecosystems that they support."

The Special Areas of Conservation at the Maidens include sandbanks, reefs and grey seals, while the areas protected at the Skerries and Causeway includes sea caves, sandbanks and reefs.

Mr Attwood said the waters off the north coast were important for harbour porpoises.

"This designation confirms that their numbers in this area are significant th roughout the year. I hope this encourages people to visit the area to get a glimpse of these beautiful animals."

In the Autumn, the assembly is due to debate the Marine Bill, which aims to protect the coastal areas.

Previously designated marine areas of protection include Strangford Lough, Rathlin Island, Red Bay and Murlough Bay.

Penn State's insurance company wants to deny liability coverage ...

PHILADELPHIA ? Penn State's general liability insurer hopes to deny or limit coverage for Jerry Sandusky-related claims.

The Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association Insurance argues that Penn State withheld key information needed to assess risk, at least after school officials investigated a May 1998 complaint that Sandusky had showered with a boy on campus.

In a memo filed this week in Common Pleas Court in Philadelphia, the company argues that Penn State failed to disclose that it had information about Sandusky that "was material to the insurable risk assumed by PMA."

The company, which has long insured the university, also argues that its policies after March 1, 1992, were amended to exclude "abuse or molestation." The insurer also argues that coverage for such behavior is excluded as a matter of public policy in Pennsylvania.

Sandusky, a former assistant football coach at Penn State, was convicted of molesting 10 boys, some of them on campus.

Skydiver "Fearless Felix" Baumgartner has done it again.

On Wednesday, Baumgartner took another stratospheric leap, this time from an altitude of more than 18 miles ? an estimated 96,640 feet, nearly three times higher than cruising jetliners. He landed safely near Roswell, N.M. His top speed was an estimated 536 mph, said Brian Utley, an official observer on site.

It's the second test jump for Baumgartner from such extreme heights and a personal best. He's aiming for a record-breaking jump from 125,000 feet, or 23 miles, in another month. He hopes to go supersonic then, breaking the speed of sound with just his body.

"It has always been a dream of mine," Baumgartner said in a statement following Wednesday's feat. "Only one more step to go."

Longtime record-holder Joe Kittinger jumped from 102,800 feet ? 19.5 miles ? in 1960 for the Air Force. Kittinger monitored Wednesday's dry run from a mini Mission Control in Roswell.

As he did in March, the 43-year-old Austrian ascended alone in an enclosed capsule lifted by a giant helium balloon that took off from Roswell. He wore a full-pressure suit equipped with parachutes and an oxygen supply ? there's virtually no atmosphere that far up.

It took about 1? hours to reach his target altitude. He was in free fall for an estimated three minutes and 48 seconds before opening his parachutes.

"It felt completely different at 90,000 feet," Baumgartner noted. "There is no control when you exit the capsule. There is no way to get stable."

In March, Baumgartner jumped from 71,581 feet, more than 13 miles, saluting before stepping from the capsule. Bad weather earlier this week delayed the second test jump until Wednesday.

NASA is paying close attention to this Red Bull-funded project dubbed Stratos, short for stratosphere. The space agency wants to learn all it can about potential escape systems for future rocketships.

Baumgartner won't come close to space, even on the ultimate jump that's planned for late August or early September. Space officially begins at 100 kilometers, or 62 miles ? more than 328,000 feet.

Baumgartner, a former military parachutist and extreme athlete, has jumped more than 2,500 times from planes and helicopters, as well as from skyscrapers and landmarks, including the 101-story Taipei 101 in Taiwan.

Kittinger, who turns 84 on Friday, was an Air Force captain when he made his historic jump for what was called Project Excelsior. He reached 614 mph on that dive, equivalent to Mach 0.9, just shy of the sound barrier.

Baumgartner expects to accelerate to 690 mph on his final plunge.

Newlywed refuses to give in to incurable cancer | Cancer Kick

Jul 22 2012
EXCLUSIVE By Heather Greenaway

WITH her gorgeous smile and bright eyes, you would never guess Charlene McEwan is suffering from incurable brain cancer.

This time last year, the 30-year-old was healthy, happy and celebrating her first wedding anniversary.

Charlene with husband Thomas in Cyprus

But last September her life came crashing down around her when she received her diagnosis.

Determined not to give in, Charlene has launched a campaign to raise funds for research into brain cancer in a bid to give sufferers a brighter future.

Her inspirational philosophy is to enjoy every minute of her life and to do it all? with a massive smile on her face and spring in her step.

Charlene, of Wishaw, Lanarkshire, said: ?I have incurable cancer, which is different to terminal cancer. What is the point in worrying about the future and wasting time being miserable about something I cannot do anything about? I want to be able to look back and have no regrets. I want to have made wonderful memories with my friends and showed my amazing family and fabulous husband just how much I love them.

?I will never lie down to my illness. No one ever knows what lies round the corner. What I do have is hope and the opportunity to raise money for research into this terrible condition, which strikes even the most healthy of people.?

Charlene, who is a manager with Lloyds Banking Group, was on business in Brighton last September when she got a migraine. Not realising she had just had a massive brain haemorrhage, she flew back to Glasgow, took paracetamol and went to bed.

Charlene, who is married to policeman Thomas, 27, said: ?I just thought I had a headache but, when it had not gone away after a few days, I rang NHS24 and they told me to go to the Wishaw General.

?I was sent for a brain scan at Glasgow?s Southern General. The scans showed I had haemorrhaged.

?Emergency surgery a few days later revealed a tumour the size of a tangerine, which was removed by neurosurgeons.

?I couldn?t believe what I had gone through in such a short space of time and was glad it was all over.?

Charlene after brain surgery

But, just a week later, Charlene and her family received the devastating news that, although the tumour had been successfully removed, she had an incurable form of cancer.

She was told treatment could put the disease into remission but that it would return, possibly within two or three years, more aggressively than before and with very low long-term survival rates.

Charlene said: ?I went from having a near-perfect life to being in the depths of despair. I kept thinking, ?Why me??

?I was healthy, didn?t smoke and went to the gym regularly. I had the dream home, dream husband and we had been trying for a family.

?My husband, my brother Liam and my sister Kathleen came with me for the biopsy results. They were inconsolable. Their cries still haunt me. I was speechless which, for me, is rare.

?However, after digesting my prognosis, I decided I was going to fight this thing every step of the way.?

Since last October, Charlene has endured intensive radiotherapy and chemotherapy at the Beatson Cancer Centre in Glasgow.

At times, this has left her physically and emotionally drained but she has remained positive and received heartening news in May when her most recent brain scan was clear.

Charlene, who got married in Cyprus two years ago, said: ?During my fight, I realised the importance of raising awareness of how brain cancers can strike suddenly and fatally.

?I was aghast to discover the lack of funding for research into brain cancers. In the UK, it amounts to less than one per cent of the total funding.

?This is woeful when you consider brain tumours kill more adults under 40 than any other cancer.

?Survival rates have barely improved in 40 years, which is unbelievable.?

Charlene added: ?The neuro-oncology team at the Beatson are fantastic. However, I can see their frustration at the limitations around funding for research and this inspired me to make a difference.

?At the moment, options for patients whose disease has recurred are limited. I?d like to think that, by the time my cancer returns, there will have been some medical breakthrough that will give me a fighting chance.?

Over the next few months, Charlene will take part in a series of events to raise funds for the University of Glasgow Brain Tumour Research Fund. This allows projects to? be kickstarted without going through prolonged applications for funding from Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council.

Charlene said: ?I only started my fundraising drive five weeks ago but we?ve already organised a charity night at Motherwell Football Club, a football tournament, a spinathon. Thomas and I and some of our friends are doing the Great Scottish Run 10k in September.

?Until now, I?ve kept the life-limiting nature of my disease secret. But I?m dedicated to doing all I can to raise money for the research fund and awareness of brain cancers.

?I have faith that, if they receive enough funding, these researchers can provide the breakthrough that will give people like me a chance for the future.?

Charlene, who has a brain scan every three months, is determined to fight.

She said: ?The doctors could not believe I survived a flight home on the same day as I had a haemorrhage or that I had been scuba diving last summer with a brain tumour. If anyone can fight it, I can.

?Time has taken on a whole new meaning. I plan things from scan to scan and have lots to look forward to. Thomas and I are hoping to go to New York in October.

?I?m determined never to lose hope and treasure each moment. I don?t want my family to be upset and, if I?m having a happy day, they are too.

?It?s a case of when the cancer returns rather than if, but I am determined to be ready for it.?

Taxable Gambling Revenues Could Help Solve Budget Crisis ...

With States falling further into debt and a massive federal deficit, many are talking about expanding the sports-betting industry and relaxing regulations surrounding online gambling in order to boost tax revenue.

As the US continues to struggle with a massive budget deficit, many are suggesting that gambling revenues could provide some much needed relief.

The standard set of negative concerns about gambling are always brought up, addiction, obsession and the loss of money. This is countered by the claim that gambling is just a form of entertainment, while some people will spend their money on theatre or concert tickets, other wish to spend it on gambling.

Now it is beginning to dawn on people that the government can also benefit. Last year the commercial casino sector in the US brought in $35.64 billion in revenues with $6.07 billion coming from the Las Vegas strip. All of these revenues are taxable which means the government can claim a significant amount of money.

At present a lot of online gambling takes place in the US, particularly on sports betting and poker, however, it is all done through offshore companies. These means that it isn?t regulated or taxed by the government, if laws were changed and the government allowed online gambling, then it would become taxable and another source of revenue.

Many state governments are now in need of financial help. It is hard to create jobs and the online gambling sector is completely untapped. If it was legalised many technology jobs would be created as well as jobs for operators and software developers. There will also be billions of taxable dollars.

At present legislation processes have started in Delaware, California and New Jersey with the hope that many online gambling activities will be legal by the end of the year. Time will tell if the rest of the country follows their example.
A bad economy can lead to large political change and legislation on gambling laws might just be the next major change to hit the US.

NCAA to impose sanctions on Penn State as Paterno statue falls

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? The NCAA announced Sunday that it will issue sanctions against Penn State in the wake of a scathing report that found that top university officials buried child sex abuse allegations against a now-convicted retired assistant and led to the tearing down of the famed statue of once-sainted coach Joe Paterno.

Shortly after Paterno?s statue was removed Sunday, six months to the day after he died, the NCAA came forward to say that it will levy ?corrective and punitive measures? against the school. The sanctions will be spelled out Monday, the NCAA said without disclosing further details.

NCAA President Mark Emmert hasn?t ruled out the possibility of shutting down the Penn State football program in the wake of the scandal, saying he had ?never seen anything as egregious.?

The Paterno family issued a statement saying the statue?s removal ?does not serve thevictims of Jerry Sandusky?s horrible crimes or help heal the Penn State community.?

?We believe the only way to help the victims is to uncover the full truth,? said the family, which vowed its own investigation following the release of an investigative report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh that found that Paterno and three other top Penn State administrators concealed sex abuse claims against Sandusky.

The family called the report ?the equivalent of an indictment ? a charging document written by a prosecutor ? and an incomplete and unofficial one at that.?

The bronze statue, weighing more than 900 pounds, was built in 2001 in honor of Paterno?s record-setting 324th Division I coaching victory and his ?contributions to the university.? Students chanted, ?We are Penn State? as the statue came down.

Penn State President Rod Erickson said he decided to have the statue removed and put into storage because it ?has become a source of division and an obstacle to healing.?

?I believe that, were it to remain, the statue will be a recurring wound to the multitude of individuals across the nation and beyond who have been the victims of child abuse,? Erickson said in a statement.

Many of those watching the statue?s removal stared in disbelief and at least one woman wept, while others expressed anger at the decision.

?I think it was an act of cowardice on the part of the university,? said Mary Trometter, of Williamsport, who wore a shirt bearing Paterno?s image. She said she felt betrayed by university officials, saying they promised openness but said nothing about the decision until just before the removal work began.

Dozens later gathered to watch and listen to the sound of sawing, scraping and shoveling as workers removed Paterno?s name and various plaques from the walls behind where the statue had stood. Shortly before midday, all that remained was the bare concrete and stone.

Few watching said they understood the decision and feared what kind of punishment the NCAA would pile on.

Cloresa Turner, who drove up from Martinsville, Va., to see the statue, clasped her hand over her mouth when she saw the statue was gone.

?He?s done so much for this university. It?s sad,? she said. ?To wipe it all away is like he meant nothing.?

In NCAA terms, the Penn State case is stunning partly because of the swift action by the governing body for college sports. NCAA investigations on issues it normally handles, such as improper benefits, can drag on for months. But in the wake of the release of the Freeh report July 12, the NCAA has shown rare speed in moving toward the punishment phase for Penn State.

Recent major scandals such as the Reggie Bush case at the University of Southern California and players at Ohio State trading memorabilia for cash and tattoos have resulted in bowl bans and the loss of scholarships.

Current NCAA rules limit the so-called death penalty ? shutting the program down completely ? to colleges already on probation that commit another major violation. But NCAA leaders have indicated in recent months they are willing to use harsher penalties for the worst offenses. That includes postseason and TV bans, which haven?t been used extensively since the 1980s.

?This is completely different than an impermissible benefits scandal like [what] happened at SMU, or anything else we?ve dealt with. This is as systemic a cultural problem as it is a football problem. There have been people that said this wasn?t a football scandal,? NCAA President Mark Emmert told PBS. ?It was that but much more. And we?ll have to figure out exactly what the right penalties are. I don?t know that past precedent makes particularly good sense in this case because it?s really an unprecedented problem.?

Another question hanging is whether Penn State ? and, by extension, Paterno, major college football?s winningest coach ? will have to vacate any victories. Paterno won 409 games for the school in his 46 seasons as head coach. USC lost a national title when it went on probation and Ohio State vacated the 2010 season, including its victory in the Sugar Bowl over Arkansas.

Kayla Weaver, a Penn State senior and member of the dance team called the Lionettes, said an NCAA death penalty would not only force the football players to transfer, but it would also force program changes for cheerleaders, dancers and band members and would hurt season ticket holders.

?It could ruin everything that we?ve built here,? said Weaver, 21, from Franklin Lakes, N.J.

On Twitter, Akeel Lynch, a running back recruit who played high school football in western New York, wrote, ?I still bleed blue and white,? while quarterback Matt McGloin wrote, ?The hotter the fire, the stronger the steel.?

Tight end Garry Gilliam tweeted, ?No matter what happens, I?m staying at Penn State.?

Windshear, A Phenomenon to Watch Out For All Pilots

Windshear is something that every aviator needs to be mindful of when flying any airplane. Windshear has been found to be cause on many mishaps in the aviation history, and therefore this meteorological event needs to be properly studied and understood by every pilot who intends to take an aircraft up in the air. Windshear is particularly dangerous when the aircraft is very close to the surface of the earth, thus aircraft either taking off or attempting to land are at the highest risk. The proximity to the ground during take-off and landing phases of flight means that there is very little margin for the pilot to react and recover the aircraft from such a low altitude in case it is caught up in a wind shear.

Wind shear has been defined as the rapid change in the direction and strength of the wind that tends to displace the airplane from its flight path, and requires considerable effort on part of the pilot to control the abrupt displacement. Wind shear usually occurs over a small area but has significant strength to disrupt normal flying.

Causes of wind shear, and Other Factors Associated with It

Topography and Jetstreams also cause windshear, this factor is more profound and evident near hilly areas and high elevation airports. Variations in the severity of the wind, and changes in its direction are always happening in the atmosphere. However, for heavy passenger jets, normally a horizontal change in wind speed of 45 knots or more and for smaller aircraft that are light in weight a change of 30 knots or more, coupled with a vertical velocity change of 4.9 knots is considered a wind shear of importance. Other meteorological factors that are often associated with wind shear include:

  • Cumulonimbus clouds and thunderstorms
  • Thermal and temperature inversions
  • Fronts and their movements
  • Severe updrafts and downdrafts
  • Microbursts and turbulence are also associated with Windshear

The potential risk posed by wind shear for the aircraft

Windshear should never be thought of as a normal change in wind velocity, the severity and abruptness of a strong shear is such that even very experienced pilots cannot maintain control of the aircraft. One may lose a lot of altitude before being able to regain control, and then physical damage may occur to the exposed parts of the airplane like landing gears, rudders, and flaps. Severe turbulence may be associated with the Windshear, which has a prominent role in the development of thunderstorms and other adverse weather conditions.

The most risky areas to encounter a windshear are takeoff and landing phases of the flight, where you are flying at a low level very close to the ground. An aircraft on an approach speed of 120 knots and a headwind component of 30 knots at 300 feet AGL, may find itself facing a 10 knot headwind at 200 feet AGL, a sudden loss of 20 knots of airspeed on the final approach. This will require very quick addition of power to regain and maintain the airspeed, any delays may taper off more speed; risk of stalling the aircraft in landing configuration may become a possibility in such an eventuality, since you are required to maintain altitude and pitch the nose up. Many more difficult situations that are potentially dangerous for the safety of the aircraft may be encountered due to Windshear, and anyone who has experienced this phenomenon would tell you that it is an extremely uncomfortable event to go through during flying.

How to Deal With Windshear

Every pilot should be aware that if thunderstorms are being reported in an area then the chances of windshear are there, therefore he/she should be mentally prepared to deal with a potential windshear. The best way to deal with a windshear is to avoid it altogether, however if you have to make an approach in a likely windshear area, the best thing to do is to keep the approach speed a little bit on the higher side to have a safety margin in case of sudden loss of airspeed on finals. The problem may be compounded due to a sudden increase in the rate of descent of the aircraft coupled with the drop in airspeed during the final approach path. This warrants prompt actions by the pilot to arrest the rate of descent by pitching the nose up and at the same time not lose any more speed, rather gain speed to or above the normal approach speed by immediately adding power. This can be tricky since at the critical stages of landing and taking off, the landing gears and flaps etc add to the drag and make sudden acceleration a difficult task. However, with proper knowledge, mental alertness, and correct timely actions, one can overcome the challenges posed by low level windshear encountered during takeoff and landing.

Mars vs. Venus: Can Long-Distance Relationships Work ... - Hendrix ...

This is a Mars vs. Venus entry, meaning I?m going to share my male perspective, and then at the end of the entry you can click over to my blogger friend Katy?s blog for the female perspective on long-distance relationships. I?m qualified to give the male perspective because I?ve been in a number of long-distance relationships as well as short-distance relationships. And because I?m a man.

Long-distance relationships are not healthy relationships.

That is not to say that they can?t succeed, if you measure success by the metric of ?can you survive the time you?re apart to someday be together again.?

You can see those success rates for the four types of long-distance relationships on the chart below.

Technically, any of these can succeed. Those in which you start dating in the same city have a greater rate of success, as you get to know a person?in person?for a while before the distance comes between you. And it helps if there?s an distinct end in sight?say, you know you?re going to live in the same city again after she comes back from Italy or he gets out of med school.

But take out any of those factors?or both?and your success rate drops. If you have no foundation in person and there?s no end in sight, you?re going to spend a lot of time, energy, and money on something that most likely won?t work out.

I wanted to get that out of the way because I know people?maybe you?re one of them?who have successfully gotten through long-distance relationships and are happy they endured all the trouble. If you ask these people for advice, they?ll tell you that long-distance is a lot of work, and hopefully they?ll give you some good tips.

Here?s the thing: Relationships are hard enough without factoring in distance. Once you factor in distance, they become outright unhealthy. Here are the ?four key reasons:

  1. Credit: Going the Distance movie, Poster design by P+A / Mojo.

You?re constantly catching up. When you?re not sharing common experiences, every conversation contains some amount of catching up. Now, this happens in any relationship, but not nearly on this level. What if I told you that from now on, you had to spend 30 minutes of your day recapping your day?experiences, thoughts, feelings, etc?with someone else? Doesn?t that make you cringe? I?m not saying that every long-distance relationship is like that, but because you?re not sharing common experiences, a decent amount of catching up is inevitable.

  2. You?re missing out on real life. I?ve been involved in 4 or 5 long-distance relationships, and in each one, I spend all this time on the phone or on e-mail instead of actually living life. The two of you are literally taking a break from real life to catch up and get to know one another. Usually you?re so caught up in each other that you can?t see it until you take a step back and realize everything you?ve missed.
  3. When you?re together, it?s unnaturally intense. Imagine if I told you that after four dates with a girl or guy, you needed to spend every minute of a 3-day weekend with her/him. 72 hours straight. That?s crazy talk, right? That?s not natural. That?s not healthy.
  4. You don?t get to know the person for whom they really are. When I?m dating someone, I want to see how she interacts in all sorts of situations. What is she like when she goes to the grocery store? What is she like in the morning? At night? With friends? With friends she doesn?t even like? When she?s had too much to drink or too little to eat. I want to see the good, the bad, and the ugly. In long-distance relationships, you mostly just get the good. You?re getting little snapshots of the person?s life, not a feature-length movie. It?s really not an accurate portrayal of who the person is.

Note that sex isn?t on that list. I think that fostering chemistry is a really important part of a relationship, but I actually think that can work in a long-distance relationship. Absence makes the heart grow hornier.

So what do you do if you?re about to embark on a long-distance relationship? Or maybe you?re already in one? I?d say call it quits. There are plenty of fish in the sea. (That?s my single male perspective.)

But of course you?re not going to do that. We all have that glimmer of hope that we?ve found that special someone and we?re going to fight through the distance. So if you do it anyway, here are five pieces of advice to follow:

  1. Credit: Like Crazy movie

Don?t talk every day. Be intentional about this, and be consistent. Not only is it unhealthy to try to talk every day for an hour or so, but it?s unsustainable, and when you realize it?s unsustainable and try to change it, you?ll give her/him the impression that something is wrong. So from the very beginning, establish ground rules about communication. Talk on the phone for 30-45 minutes a day, 4 days a week. Pick the days. Keep those boundaries. If you really care about the other person, give them the freedom to continue living their life.

  2. When you do talk, make that the only thing you?re doing at that moment. Seriously. This is really important. Don?t half-ass your conversations just because the person isn?t there to see you. Don?t be playing solitaire or surfing the web or cleaning the kitchen. You know how annoying it is when you call someone and they?re distracted by five other things. It makes you feel really unimportant, doesn?t it? Don?t do that to someone you care about. Videochats can help. It?s tough not to give someone your undivided attention on videochats.
  3. Talk more about what you?think?than what you?do.?If you follow this, you have a shot at avoiding the feeling that you?re always catching up. Thoughts and ideas are things you can share together, no matter the distance. Let the person see what you do when they?re actually there with you in person.
  4. Don?t talk about the relationship. Okay, maybe spend 5% of the time talking about the relationship. Like, the bare minimum, whatever that is. But don?t spend every conversation talking about how much you miss the person and how you can?t wait to see them and what you?ll do when you finally see them and when you?re finally going to live in the same place again. That crap will kill. The. Relationship. I know this for a fact. Once you start spending all your time on the relationship (and really, this applies to any type of relationship), you start to lose sight of all the other ways you connect with the person, all those amazing conversations you had before there was a relationship to talk about.
  5. Make sure you don?t use your girlfriend/boyfriend as your therapist. When you get in the habit of talking to someone on a regular basis, it?s human nature to use them as a sounding board for everything in your life. But you have to be careful about this. Because it?s so easy to share every problem you?re having with your significant other, you might stop spreading those aspects of your life around to your other friends as well. It becomes a burden. There?s a difference between being honest, open, and vulnerable and flat-out using someone else. Don?t use people. Especially not the ones you care about most.

Katy and I said we?d list both pros and cons to long-distance relationships, and I?ve pretty much only written cons. The pro is that it might not suck as much as I?ve predicted it will, and maybe you?ll get past it and end up with someone you truly love.

But I highly doubt it. :)

I haven?t read Katy?s take yet, but I?m eager to see her female perspective. Click over to check it out here. And if you?d like to check out our previous Mars vs. Venus entry on flirtation, click here.

What would you add to what I said above? How many long distance relationships have you been in that have failed or succeed? Did they feel healthy to you at the time?

Wireless patient monitoring to be $20.9B business in U.S. by 2016 ...

iphone_mim_screenThe U.S. market for ?advanced? wireless patient monitoring systems more than doubled in a four-year period, from $3.9 billion in 2007 to $8.9 billion in 2011 ? at an annual rate of nearly 23 percent ? according to a new report from Kalorama Information, and the growth should continue at nearly the same pace. The New York-based research firm forecasts that total to expand by 18 percent annually, reaching $20.9 billion by 2016.

?There are several factors driving double-digit growth in this market. These include the aging of the population, increasing healthcare costs, and dwindling healthcare resources which compel organizations to find devices that can help with staff shortages,? the report says.

?While there is significant monitoring in some segments, sales will be driven in new technologies as older monitoring equipment is replaced by wireless or remote monitors. Growth will increase over the forecast period as compatibility, privacy and security issues continue to be resolved.?

Much growth is coming from hospitals seeking to alleviate overcrowding in their emergency departments and avoid diversions that send patients ? and revenue ? to other facilities.

?Portable monitoring devices, which increase the ability of the staff to keep track of patients, may reduce some of the need for diversions,? Kalorama analyst and report author Melissa Elder says in a company statement. ?Additionally, staff shortages are another cause of diversions which may be addressed with the improved efficiency and workflow gained by using more efficient monitoring devices.?

Expect to see demand from outside the hospital environment, too. Home-health providers, nursing homes, the military, correctional facilities and first responders will increasingly turn to remote monitoring to manage patient populations, Elder predicts.

Kalorama defines advanced wireless monitoring systems as those that, among other things, incorporate new peripherals, facilitate live audio and video for real-time communication between patients and clinicians, parse collected data to frame information in context of each patient?s condition and connect to electronic medical records. The definition also includes ?full-service outsourcing? of care to a remote clinician, who then reports back to the patient?s attending physician.

Right now, the market for such monitoring technologies is ?extremely fragmented,? the report says, and most of the players are relatively small, privately held companies. ?However, large, well-known, and well-respected companies in healthcare have developed remote patient monitoring systems for the hospital market, aiding faster acceptance by healthcare professionals and administration,? Elder writes.

With this in mind, Elder takes an in-depth look at specific telemedicine products from about 20 companies, including medical device heavyweights Medtronic and St. Jude Medical and telemedicine-specific operations such as Second Opinion Telemedicine Solutions and American TeleCare.
