NSW vows to act on Australia's biggest flood risk - Local - Insurance ...

Email Print

Flood mitigation for the at-risk Hawkesbury-Nepean region of western Sydney is finally at the top of the political agenda, with the NSW Government and the Federal Opposition vowing to take action.

Following an announcement that NSW will hold a strategic review of flood management for the region, the Federal Coalition?s leaked dams strategy has been shown to feature a $500 million plan to raise the wall of the nearby Warragamba Dam.

As reported in Insurance News (the magazine) in August 2011, the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley is one of the most heavily developed floodplains in Australia and the country?s biggest flood risk.

NSW Primary Industries Minister Katrina Hodgkinson says the NSW Office of Water will chair a multi-agency review with input from the Sydney Catchment Authority, the State Emergency Service, the Bureau of Meteorology and Infrastructure NSW.

The review, which will report to the State Government later this year, will consider flood planning, mitigation and response, including current arrangements.?

It will also consider whether alternative operating procedures at Warragamba Dam ? which supplies 80% of Sydney?s drinking water ? can help mitigate flood impacts downstream, Ms Hodgkinson says.

The State Government announcement follows the release last October of Infrastructure NSW?s State Infrastructure Strategy 2012-2032, which featured a $500 million flood mitigation plan for the area ? to be completed by 2017 ? as a key recommendation.

A flood study conducted for the strategy report found 21,000 homes exist on the floodplain, more than 5000 more than was previously thought. Some 143 hectares of commercial and industrial property has also been built on the plain since 1990.

A one-in-1000-year flood ? similar to that in Queensland in early 2011 ? would destroy 6500 homes and flood 14,000 houses above floor level, causing $8 billion of damage, the study says. The flood would severely affect towns such as Windsor, Pitt Town, McGraths Hill, Vineyard and Wilberforce.

Such an event would put 43,000 residents and 9000 workers at risk and cause up to six months? disruption to the main western rail line, affecting Blue Mountains passengers and NSW coal exports.

A repeat of the one-in-200-year flood that hit the region in 1867 would cause up to $3 billion damage.

Infrastructure NSW CEO Paul Broad says if flood mitigation is not undertaken the state ?will need to spend an estimated $400-$600 million removing capacity constraints from major flood evacuation routes, including the M4 and Great Western Highway, although this will not stop a flood from affecting the area?.

The Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC), which counts the Liverpool, Penrith, Blacktown and Hawkesbury councils among its 10 members, has welcomed the focus on flood mitigation.

It wants the wall of Warragamba Dam raised by 23 metres, which would cost about $346 million, with associated costs pushing the bill to $500 million.

It is the ?only option if you?re going to prevent any major flood event?, WSROC VP and Hawkesbury Council Deputy Mayor Tiffany Tree told insuranceNEWS.com.au.

Raising the dam wall was first suggested in 1995, but the decision was taken to manage flood risk through road upgrades and building a dam spillway to release excess water.

A spokesman for the Insurance Council of Australia says the organisation and its members look forward to contributing to the NSW review.

?Determining where and how to mitigate existing flood risk is a complex process involving a range of stakeholders,? he said. ?The collective experience of the general insurance industry will be an important element in mitigation decision-making processes.?

Italy faces post-vote stalemate, spooking investors

ROME (Reuters) - The Italian stock market fell and state borrowing costs rose on Tuesday as investors took fright at political deadlock after a stunning election that saw a protest party lead the poll and no group had a clear majority in parliament.

"The winner is: Ingovernability" ran the headline in Rome newspaper Il Messaggero, reflecting the stalemate the country would have to confront in the next few weeks as sworn enemies would be forced to work together to form a government.

In a sign of where that might lead, former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi indicated his center-right might be open to a grand coalition with the center-left bloc of Pier Luigi Bersani, which will have a majority in the lower house thanks to a premium of seats given to the largest bloc in the chamber.

Results in the upper house, the Senate, where seats are awarded on a region-by-region basis, indicated the center-left would end up with about 119 seats, compared with 117 for the center-right. But 158 are needed for a majority to govern.

Any coalition government that may be formed must have a working majority in both houses in order to pass legislation.

World financial markets reacted nervously to the prospect of a stalemate in the euro zone's third-largest economy with memories still fresh of the crisis that took the 17-member currency bloc to the brink of collapse in 2011.

The Milan bourse was down more than four percent at its opening and the spread between yields on 10-year Italian and German government bonds widened to 338.7 basis points, the highest since December 10. An ally of conservative German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged Italy to stick with reforms pursued by the outgoing technocratic emergency government of Mario Monti.

However, the poor showing by Prime Minister Monti's centrist bloc reflected a weariness with austerity that was exploited by both Berlusconi and comic Beppe Grillo; his anti-establishment 5-Star Movement won more votes than any other single party, taking 25 percent nationally. Bersani's allies helped his center-left bloc win the lower house by just 125,000 votes.

Berlusconi, a media magnate whose campaigning all but eroded Bersani's once commanding lead, said he was not worried about market reaction and played down the significance of the spread.

In a telephone call to a morning television show, he said: "Italy must be governed." He ruled out a deal with Monti but said he "must reflect" on a possible deal with the center left: "Every (political side) must be prepared to make sacrifices."

The euro skidded to an almost seven-week low against the dollar in Asia on fears about the euro zone's debt crisis. It fell as far as $1.3042, its lowest since January 10.

Another indication of investors' reaction to the results will come later on Tuesday when the Treasury auctions 8.75 billion euros in 6-month bonds.

Bersani claimed victory in the lower house and said it was obvious that Italy was in "a very delicate situation".

Grillo, however, showed no immediate willingness to negotiate. Commentators said all his adversaries underestimated the appeal of a grassroots movement that called itself a "non-party", particularly its allure among young Italians who find themselves without jobs and the prospect of a decent future.

"NON-PARTY" SURGES TO THE TOP

The 5-star Movement's score of 25.5 percent in the lower house was just ahead of the 25.4 percent for Bersani's Democratic Party, which ran in a coalition with the leftist SEL party, and it won almost 8.7 million votes overall - more than any other single party.

"The 'non-party' has become the largest party in the country," said Massimo Giannini, commentator for the Rome newspaper La Repubblica about Grillo, who mixes fierce attacks on corruption with policies ranging from clean energy to free Internet.

Grillo's surge in the final weeks of the campaign threw the race open, with hundreds of thousands turning up at his rallies to hear him lay into targets ranging from corrupt politicians and bankers to German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

In just three years, his 5-Star Movement, heavily backed by a frustrated generation of young Italians increasingly shut out from permanent full-time jobs, has grown from a marginal group to one of the most talked about political forces in Europe.

RECESSION

"It's a classic result. Typically Italian," said Roberta Federica, a 36-year-old office worker in Rome. "It means the country is not united. It is an expression of a country that does not work. I knew this would happen."

Italy's borrowing costs have come down in recent months, helped by the promise of European Central Bank support but the election result confirmed fears of many European countries that it would not produce a government strong enough to implement effective reforms.

A long recession and growing disillusionment with mainstream parties fed a bitter public mood that saw more than half of Italian voters back parties that rejected the austerity policies pursued by Monti with the backing of Italy's European partners.

Monti suffered a major setback. His centrist grouping won only 10.6 percent and two of his key centrist allies, Pier Ferdinando Casini and lower house speaker Gianfranco Fini, both of parliamentarians for decades, were booted out.

"It's not that surprising if you consider how much people were let down by politics in its traditional forms," Monti said.

Berlusconi's campaign, mixing sweeping tax cut pledges with relentless attacks on Monti and Merkel, echoed many of the themes pushed by Grillo and underlined the increasingly angry mood of the Italian electorate.

Stefano Zamagni, an economics professor at Bologna University said the result showed that a significant share of Italians "are fed up with following the austerity line of Germany and its northern allies".

"These people voted to stick one up to Merkel and austerity," he said.

Even if the next government turns away from the tax hikes and spending cuts brought in by Monti, it will struggle to revive an economy that has scarcely grown in two decades.

Monti was widely credited with tightening Italy's public finances and restoring its international credibility after the scandal-plagued Berlusconi, whom he replaced as the 2011 financial crisis threatened to spin out of control.

But he struggled to pass the kind of structural reforms needed to improve competitiveness and lay the foundations for a return to economic growth, and a weak center-left government may not find it any easier.

Lyoto Machida pulls out split-decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 157

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lyoto Machida took a split decision over Dan Henderson in the co-main event at UFC 157 on Saturday. The judges saw it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Machida.

Machida was elusive as usual in the first round, but Henderson was able to sneak in and land a few kicks and punches. At the end of the round, Machida took Henderson down with a leg trip and landed strikes.

The second round showed Machida still being elusive and keeping his distance from Henderson. Machida tried for a front kick several times, but couldn't land it. Meanwhile, Henderson couldn't land much.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Henderson is known for his big, overhand punches. Most of the time, when he throws it, it can mean the end of a fight. However, he had trouble getting close enough to Machida for the overhand to work.

In the third round, Machida moved in for a takedown but ended up with Henderson on top. Henderson used elbows from the top, but Machida was able to get out with less than two minutes left in the fight.

Before the fight, UFC president Dana White said that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put the title up against Chael Sonnen in April, but the next fight will likely go to Machida.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss]

Machida was once the UFC light heavyweight champion, but lost the title to Rua in 2010. Since then, he has wins over Randy Couture and Ryan Bader, but losses to current champion Jon Jones and Quinton Jackson. It will be his third chance at the light heavyweight title. He won it with a knockout of Rashad Evans in 2009, but lost to Jones in 2011.

Henderson had a long layoff between fights. His last bout was one of the best in MMA history. In November of 2011, Henderson defeated Mauricio Rua in a five-round decision. Since then, Henderson had a fight lined up with Jones in September, but had to pull out at the last minute because of a knee injury. His record falls to 29-9. He's 42 years old, and against Machida, looked slow and old for the first time in his career.

Bahrain opposition: Protester dies from injuries

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? An opposition official in Bahrain says a 20-year-old protester died from injuries suffered during clashes with security forces.

The death is the second this month blamed on riot police in the tense Gulf kingdom and could put further pressure on political talks aimed at ending two years of unrest.

Bahrain's majority Shiites have led an uprising for a greater political voice in the Sunni-ruled nation, home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Hadi al-Musawi, a spokesman for the Shiite group Al Wefaq, said the protester died early Friday from a head injury sustained Feb. 14 when he was hit with a tear gas canister fired by security forces. Bahraini officials had no immediate comment.

More than 60 people, more according to some activists, have been killed in unrest in Bahrain.

Boston Marathon Runner Climbs Hills In Fight To Cure Cancer

MILFORD, Mass. ? Jamie Gornstein Tighe wakes up at 4:30 a.m. on weekdays and immediately hops on a treadmill. On Saturdays, she gets to sleep in until 6 a.m. before heading out in to the cold and running 10 to 20 miles. But it could be worse.

?Long runs are hard, but it?s not chemo,? said Tighe, a Franklin resident. ?When I?m done, I?ll be sore and I won?t be able to walk for a day or two. But people going through cancer won?t have that luxury. They?re going through an extremely painful experience.

?I just tell myself to suck it up ? you?re not going through cancer."

Tighe doesn?t consider herself a true runner. But in April, she?ll be running her second Boston Marathon with the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team. Every dollar she raises supports the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research, which funds the ?brightest, most creative scientists making basic research discoveries.?

In 2011, Tighe raised more than $12,000 in memory of her close friend Andy Swan, who died at age 35 from Stage IV lung cancer.

?Andy was a non-smoker and in excellent health,? she said. ?This diagnosis came completely out of left field. And he died 10 months after diagnosis, leaving behind his wife and 4-year-old son. He was a filmmaker with a bright future, and it was such a devastating blow.

?His father is now battling prostate cancer and is also being treated by Dana-Farber. This year I am running in Andy?s memory and in honor of Bob, Andy?s father. My goal is just shy of $13,000, as I want to raise $25,000 for my two marathons.?

Tighe said she has already raised more than $6,500 on Facebook, and she is organizing a fundraiser for April 6 with current and former players from the Patriots and Celtics. The fundraiser is tentatively planned for 3 to 6 p.m. at CJ?s in Framingham.

?I have every confidence that people will help me get to that goal,? she said. ?I?m hoping every little bit adds up, and I can reach that goal of $12,880.?

Tighe, who has daughters in second and sixth grades, is a special needs job coach at Medway High School. As a result, her only time to train is before the sun comes up.

?You do what you got to do,? she said. ?That?s part of being a mom and working. But it?s such an important cause, and the time has to go in. It?s also great for my girls to see this, so they?re inspired to do something like this.?

On Saturdays, Tighe joins her Dana-Farber teammates for long group runs. Most of the runs are on the Boston Marathon course with hilly routes to prepare them for Heartbreak Hill and for the 26.2-mile race, she said.

But it?s not just the team's camaraderie that helps her through the marathon training.

?I couldn't do this without my husband Kevin?s support,? Tighe said. ?He takes our daughters to their basketball games every Saturday so I can run, and then he takes care of them when I am trying to recover.

?And he's a great masseuse, post-run,? she added.

For more information about Tighe?s fundraising, visit her page.

Taxpayers' money keeps Japan's whaling fleet afloat

NOT just cruel, but a waste of money too. Japanese government statistics reveal that the country's whaling fleet makes a loss and has to be subsidised by taxpayers.

According to a report by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), Japan's whaling fleet has been unable to cover its costs since 2006. The Fisheries Agency of Japan has been propping it up with public money, giving 715 million yen ($8.9 million) in 2011.

"The argument for whaling is not economic," says marine biologist Leah Gerber of Arizona State University in Tempe, who is not affiliated with IFAW. She says whaling is bound up with national pride and a belief that eating the meat is part of cultural identity.

Demand for whale meat has been declining since the 1960s,however, and stockpiles of it are growing. An IFAW survey found that only 11 per cent of Japanese citizens support whaling. "The government is encouraging a market that doesn't exist," says Gerber. "It's not healthy to eat whales because they contain mercury, and people know that."

There has been a voluntary moratorium on commercial whaling since 1986, but Norway, Iceland and Japan have continued. Instead of the moratorium, Gerber proposes establishing a global market in which a whaling quota can be divided up and bid for (Nature, doi.org/fxs3tv). That way conservationists could buy up the quotas, likely saving more whales than they do by harassing whalers at sea.

5 killed as plane crash-lands in eastern Ukraine

By Richard Balmforth, Reuters

At least five people were killed when a plane carrying supporters to a European soccer match in eastern Ukraine overshot the runway and broke up when it attempted an emergency landing late on Wednesday, officials said.

The twin-engined Antonov turboprop was bringing 45 passengers and crew on a charter flight from the Black Sea coastal city of Odessa to Donetsk - most of them fans looking forward to attending a Champions League clash between the Ukrainian home team Shakhtar and Germany's Borussia Dortmund.

The emergencies ministry, quoted by Interfax news agency, said the aircraft overshot the landing strip at Donetsk airport which an eyewitness said was shrouded in thick fog at the time. It overturned and broke up.

Apart from the five people confirmed dead, 12 others had been injured, the ministry said.

Andriy Shyshatsky, head of Donetsk's regional administration speaking before a fifth dead was confirmed, said the majority of passengers had been saved.

"One person is visible in the wreckage, but we don't yet know whether he is alive or not. We are searching for one other person," Shyshatsky told journalists.

An airport source quoted by Interfax said a stewardess who had been at the rear of the plane was unaccounted for.

A minute of silence was observed for the dead at the start of the Champions League match.

There was no immediate word on why the flight crew had had to make an emergency landing. But a survivor of the crash, quoted by Interfax, said there had been a fire on board which had been brought under control.

This was not immediately confirmed by officials.

Samsung Is Planning An Enormous Launch For The S4 - Business ...

Samsung is planning a huge launch for its next flagship phone, the S4, and it could pull resources away from Apple, says Jefferies analyst Peter Misek.

According to Misek's sources, Samsung is planning to build 100 million S4s from launch until the end of the year. He thinks the phone is launched in the March-April time frame.

"The enormous 100 million S4 build plan (we estimate the S3 sold 60M) is leading some suppliers to say that they will reallocate resources away from Apple," writes Misek, adding, "The S3 also had enormous builds and came within 10% of meeting them on an annual basis."

The S4 is expected to have a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED+ screen and possibly an 8-core processor.

Meanwhile, Apple, according to Misek is cutting orders for the iPhone 5 because suppliers says sales are decelerating faster than expected. He also says Apple wanted to release a 4.8-inch iPhone this year, but manufacturers are struggling to make the screen Apple wants, and Apple may wait until it has new iOS software ready.

Why Insomnia Increases Suicide Risk

Nightmares and unhealthy beliefs about sleep may increase the risk of suicide in people who are depressed, a new study suggests.

The findings reaffirm earlier research linking sleep problems to an increased risk of suicide, and suggest which symptoms doctors might want to target with treatment to reduce that risk, the researchers said.

Unhealthy beliefs about sleep can take several forms: for example, the thought that a poor night's sleep will disturb sleep for the whole week, or that sleep loss will have dire and irreversible consequences. Such ideas carry an atmosphere of hopelessness, an emotion researchers know is connected to suicide risk.

"Insomnia can lead to a very specific type of hopelessness, and hopelessness by itself is a powerful predictor of suicide," said study researcher Dr. W. Vaughn McCall, chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Health Behavior at Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta.

While the factors that contribute to suicide risk are not the same for everyone, "For some patients, I think sleep problems are part of the [symptom] profile," McCall said.

During the study, McCall and colleagues surveyed 50 depressed people ages 20 to 84, some of whom were in the hospital. Nearly every patient was taking some type of psychiatric medication, and 56 percent had attempted suicide at least once.

The study participants were surveyed to assess their degree of insomnia and suicidal thinking, as well as whether they experienced nightmares or unhealthy beliefs about sleep.

The study found a link between insomnia and suicidal thinking: The more severe a person's insomnia was, the more likely he or she was to express suicidal thoughts and desires. However, when the researches took into account whether or not individuals experienced frequent nightmares or unhealthy beliefs about sleep, the link disappeared. This indicates the two factors ?nightmares and unhealthy beliefs about sleep ?play a role in the link.

Earlier studies have found that people with insomnia are up to twice as likely to commit suicide as people who don't have such difficulties sleeping. A 2011 study in teens found that those who had sleep problems at ages 12 to 14 were 2.5 times more likely to have suicidal thoughts in their late teen years.

Depending on the person, insomnia could be a cause or an effect of depression, McCall said. Insomnia may exacerbate depression because people feel they cannot find relief or escape from their condition, even at night, he said.

"People become pretty discouraged and demoralized living with insomnia night and after night," McCall said.

The new study, along with previous work, suggests that people with insomnia should be evaluated for mental illness, including depression and suicide risk, McCall said.

Treating nightmares or unhealthy beliefs about sleep with psychotherapy or, perhaps, medication may reduce the risk of suicide, but future studies will be needed to investigate this. McCall plans to conduct more research to see if treating insomnia with sleep medication can reduce the risk of suicide.

Pass it on: Insomnia may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts.

Tim Cook's Nike Board Seat Will Be A Conflict For ... - Business Insider

Photo by Don Feria/Apple via Getty Images

Tim Cook, wearing a FuelBand

?

Apple reportedly working on a wearable computing device, which we're calling an "iWatch."

If these reports are accurate ? and frankly it would be weird if Apple wasn't at least exploring the idea ? then it's a problem for CEO Tim Cook.

Cook is on the board of Nike which has its own sort of digital watch/wearable computer, the Nike FuelBand. The Nike FuelBand measures your steps, gives you an estimate of calories burned, tells time, and measures Nike's made up "Fuel Points."

The FuelBand is supposed to track your fitness and get you exercising more.

Right now, it's a very rudimentary gadget. In the years to come as the product evolves, it will do much more. Look at the first iPod compared to the iPod Touch today, if you need to get an idea about how a simple product can grow over time.

Now, let's think about what an iWatch could do. Could it have fitness tracking applications? You better believe it. Would anyone need two devices like a FuelBand and an iWatch if one gets the job done? Probably not.

This is where it will get tricky for Cook. Apple's iWatch, which is largely theoretical right now, would probably end up competing with Nike's FuelBand. If Cook is sitting on Nike's board as it's developing the roadmap for the FuelBand, while at the same time Apple is developing an iWatch, then he's getting an inside look at what works and what doesn't for a gadget you wear.

As MG Siegler recently pointed out, it's not too different from Google's CEO Eric Schmidt sitting on Apple's board as it developed the iPad and iPhone. While he was listening to Apple talk about the iPhone, Google was developing Android, which would become the number one threat to Apple's iPhone business.

The FuelBand isn't as important to Nike's business as the iPhone is to Apple's business. But there's no way Cook should be getting information about how to make Apple's wearable computer better than the FuelBand as a board member.

We reached out to Nike for comment, but it just said it's not going to talk about rumors or speculation.

Bill Gates talks Steve Jobs, health, tech on Reddit

Bill Gates appeared on social news site Reddit this morning for an "ask me anything" or AMA post, in which he responded to unfiltered questions from a horde of anonymous users. The discussion ranged from broader Internet and computing issues to personal details and his work at the Foundation.

Gates is currently the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, but is more well-known for heading Microsoft during its salad days in the '90s ? and, of course, for being among the world's richest individuals.

The AMA post was put up at about 10 AM Pacific time, alerting users that Gates would be answering questions starting at 10:45. This delay gives the users of Reddit some time to write in and vote up answers they would like to hear the billionaire philanthropist answer.

Gates "verified" the post was real in the traditional manner of taking a picture of himself holding a piece of paper with his username. The answers started rolling in promptly at 10:45; here are a few of the more interesting ones:

On the goals and accomplishments of the Gates Foundation:

So far our biggest impact has been getting vaccines for things like diarrhea and pneumonia out which has saved millions of lives. Polio will be a great achievement along with key partners when that gets done.

Our goals are focused on helping the poorest (globally) and improving education (in the US). We spend half of our money on global health. One metric to look at is reducing the number of children (under 5) who die. My annual letter talks about the amazing progress that has been made on this. Amazingly as health improves families choose to have less kids so paradoxically population growth goes DOWN as you improve health helping with almost every issue - from stability to the environment..

On what still needs to be done:

It would be nice if all governments were as rational as the Nordic governments - reaching compromise and providing services broadly. The Economist had a nice special section on this last week. Africa governments have often been weak but you can't write a check to change that. Fortunately the average quality is going up.

I am disappointed more isn't being done to reduce carbon emissions. Governments need to spend more on basic energy R&D to make sure we get cheap non-CO2 emitting sources as soon as possible.

Polio is the first thing to get done [eliminate] since we are close. Within 6 years we will have the last case. After that we will go after malaria and measles. Malaria kills over 500,000 kids every year mostly in Africa and did not get enough attention until the last decade. We also need vaccines to prevent HIV and TB which are making progress...

On his hobbies:

I love playing tennis. I am an avid bridge player (a card game if you have not heard of it - it was more popular in the past!). I like to tour interesting things with my kids like power plants, garbage dumps, the Large Hadron Collider, Antarctica, missile Silos (Arizona),... I read a lot and watch courses (online or the Learning Company)..

On what he gives people for their birthdays:

Free software. Just kidding. Books actually.

On his favorite book...

My favorite of the last decade in Pinker's Better Angels of our Nature. It is long but profound look at the reduction in violence and discrimination over time. I review a lot of the books I read at gatesnotes.com (is that too self-promotional?)

...Band...

Weezer.... Actually U2 is a favorite.. I keep waiting for Spinal Tap to go back on tour...

...And programming language:

I write some C, C# and some Basic. I am surprised new languages have not made more progress in simplifying programming. It would be great if most high school kids were exposed to programming...

On what he'd do if Microsoft hadn't taken off:

If the microprocessor had NOT come along I am not sure what I would have done. Maybe medicine or theoretical math but it is hard to say.

On Steve Jobs:

He and I respected each other. Our biggest joint project was the Mac where Microsoft had more people on the project than Apple did as we wrote a lot of applications. I saw Steve regularly over the years including spending an afternoon with him a few months before he tragically passed away...

On what the non-wealthy can do improve the world:

Most giving is done by the middle class so it is the backbone of generosity particularly in the United States. A key thing is to support government aid which is only 1% of the budget but helps poor countries in incredible ways.

On the next big thing in computers:

Robots, pervasive screens, speech interaction will all change the way we look at "computers". Once seeing, hearing, and reading (including handwriting) work very well you will interact in new ways..

On Microsoft's next big thing in computers:

I just got my Surface Pro a week ago and it is very nice. I am using a Perceptive Pixel display right now - huge Windows 8 touch whiteboard. These will come down in price over time and be pervasive...

On the last thing on his "bucket list":

Don't die...

Lastly, a user named t_zidd had not a question but aheartfelt "thank you" message:

I need you to see this, MR GATES! I don't have any questions. But I just want to thank you for 100% funding my undergraduate and masters. If not for the Gates Millennium Scholarship, I don't think I could have gone to college. So, once again, from the absolute bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. You have NO idea how much this means to me.

No doubt many who have benefited from the Foundation's work would say the same if they could.

Gates signed off about an hour after he started, suggesting readers visit his website for more information (or follow the many links he provided). The rest of his posts can be found at his Reddit profile. But he left the community one last gift, poking fun at a himself with an infamous picture of him from the 80s, captioned in "meme" style:

Of course, he of all people knows it's not going anywhere.

See why Google is paying Apple $1 billion

SYDNEY: Google will pay Apple one billion dollars next year to keep its position as the default search engine in iOS, a report has claimed.

The financial services firm came to the figure in a report titled "The Next Google is Google" after taking a closer look at how Google makes and spends money in the mobile space.

Morgan Stanley analyst Scott Devitt based the figure on the fact that Google and have a deal in place which sees Apple reap a certain amount of money per device sold with Google.com as the default search engine, the Age reports.

Devitt estimated the cost Google has been paying to Apple per device has been growing year-on-year and that so too has the number of iOS devices Apple has sold.

Because of this, he estimated that Apple would in 2014 be raking in about one billion dollars from Google for the privilege of keeping Google.com as iOS's default search engine ahead of rivals Bing and Yahoo.

According to the paper, the deal Google has with Apple is similar to one it has with the makers of the Opera and Mozilla web browsers, which both have Google.com as the default search engine.

Morgan Stanley reported the Mozilla Foundation is expected to get 400 million dollars in 2014 in its deal with Google, the paper said.

(4) Duke 62, Boston College 61: Near miss for the Eagles

In a wild, maniacal season of upsets, this one would have been the most unlikely.

With 2:16 left, a Boston College team that had lost six of seven had college royalty Duke, the fourth-ranked team in the land, by five points. It was not enough.

"You have no idea how this tears you up," said Eagles coach Steve Donahue after the crushing 62-61 loss before a rollicking gathering of 6,709 at Conte Forum.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski knew he?d gotten out of town just in time. This wasn?t about his vaunted team. "It was about them," he said. The losing team. "They were terrific."

Freshman Olivier Hanlan?s two free throws had given BC a 61-56 lead. Quinn Cook hit a 3 for Duke to make it a two-point game. Duke tied it at 61 on a pair from the line by Mason Plumlee with 46 seconds left. Plumlee went back to the line for two more with 25 seconds left. He made just one.

The Eagles called timeout with 21 seconds remaining. With the clock winding down and everybody in the building standing, Hanlan drove the lane and missed. Several players desperately grasping for the rebound, including BC?s Ryan Anderson, tumbled to the floor. As Anderson fought for the ball, hoping for one last shot, the buzzer sounded.

Upset alert turned into a false alarm.

Donahue thought his team "matured a great deal. Their attitude was, ?Let?s grind it out, play in the moment.? ? We had the ball. Last shot. Couldn?t ask for much more than that."

Hanlan, the only ACC player from Canada (Quebec) led all scorers with 20. "Olivier played terrific," said Donahue. "This is his life. He wants to be great. The reason we can play with Duke is Olivier Hanlan."

Anderson finished with 17 points and six rebounds. "He?s really a good player," said Krzyzewski. "He?s not a 4 or a 5. He?s a basketball player. It makes him hard to guard. He made some big plays."

Plumlee (19) and Seth Curry (18) topped Duke?s scoring. The Blue Devils move to 21-2 (8-2 in the ACC). BC slips to 10-13 (2-8).

"Nothing about tonight was easy," said Krzyzewski. About all the upsets this season, he said, "There are a lot of good teams and no great ones."

BC played about as well as it could. Donahue liked his team?s defensive stamina. Duke shot just 40 percent, BC 44.7. "We tried to stay away from Duke?s four or five baskets runs," he said

"It?s extremely disappointing. We almost beat an elite team," said Donahue.

The Eagles came out playing dedicated defense. It took Duke nearly five minutes to get on the board.

The Blue Devils took a 25-24 lead on Plumlee?s conventional three-point play, but Hanlan responded quickly at the other end for a three to put the Eagles back up by 2. The half ended 27-27 when Plumlee stuffed in a putback off a missed shot.

Curry (8) and Plumlee (7) led the Duke scoring. Hanlan had 10 for BC. The visitors shot 44 percent to BC?s 38.

With Wake Forest here Wednesday night, Donahue was hoping to put this game behind him as quickly as possible. "There are a lot worse things in life."

In the moment though, it really stung.

Clashes mar slain Tunisian leader's mass funeral

Police and mourners clashed at the funeral of secular opposition leader Chokri Belaid, whose assassination has plunged Tunisia deeper into political crisis. NBCNews.com's Alex Witt reports.

By Tarek Amara and Alistair Lyon, Reuters

TUNIS, Tunisia -- Police and mourners clashed at the mass funeral on Friday of secular opposition leader Chokri Belaid, whose assassination has plunged Tunisia deeper into political crisis.

Braving chilly rain, at least 50,000 people turned out to honor Belaid in his home district of Jebel al-Jaloud in the capital, chanting anti-Islamist and anti-government slogans.

It was Tunisia's biggest funeral since the death of Habib Bourguiba, independence leader and first president, in 2000.

Violence erupted near the cemetery as police fired teargas at demonstrators who threw stones and set cars ablaze. Police also used teargas against protesters near the Interior Ministry, a frequent flashpoint for clashes in the Tunisian capital.

Tunisia, cradle of the Arab Spring uprisings, is riven by tensions between dominant Islamists and their secular opponents, and by frustration at the lack of social and economic progress since President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was ousted in January 2011.

Belaid's assassination has shocked a country that had hitherto experienced a relatively peaceful political transition.

"The people want a new revolution," shouted mourners in Tunis, who also sang the national anthem.

Crowds surged around an open army truck carrying Belaid's coffin, draped in a red and white Tunisian flag, as it traveled to the leafy Jallaz cemetery, as a security forces helicopter flew overhead.

    EPA

Tunisian protesters run from teargas fired by police during protests Friday against the killing of opposition politician Chokri Belaid. Belaid's funeral drew tens of thousands of mourners and Tunis seethed with anger.

"Belaid, rest in peace, we will continue the struggle," mourners chanted, holding portraits of the politician killed near his home on Wednesday by a gunman who fled on a motorcycle.

Some demonstrators denounced Rachid Ghannouchi, leader of the ruling Islamist Ennahda party. "Ghannouchi, assassin, criminal," they chanted. "Tunisia is free, terrorism out."

Police fired teargas to disperse anti-government protesters throwing stones and gasoline bombs in the southern mining town of Gafsa, a stronghold of support for Belaid, witnesses said.

Crowds there had chanted "The people want the fall of the regime," a slogan first used against Ben Ali.

    Cradle of revolt
In Sidi Bouzid, the southern town where the revolt against the ousted strongman began, about 10,000 marched to mourn Belaid and shout slogans against Ennahda and the government.

Banks, factories and some shops were closed in Tunis and other cities in response to a strike called by unions in protest at Belaid's killing, but buses were running normally.

Tunis Air suspended all its flights because of the strikes, a spokesman for the national airline said. Airport sources in Cairo said EgyptAir had canceled two flights to Tunisia after staff at Tunis airport joined the general strike.

    Anis Mili / Reuters

Soldiers help mourners carry the coffin of slain opposition leader Chokri Belaid during his funeral procession Friday in Tunis, Tunisia.

After Belaid's assassination, Prime Minister Hamdi Jebali, an Islamist, said he would dissolve the government and form a cabinet of technocrats to rule until elections could be held.

But his own Ennahda party and its secular coalition partners complained they had not been consulted, casting doubt over the status of the government and compounding political uncertainty.

No one has claimed responsibility for the killing of Belaid, a lawyer and secular opposition figure.

His family have blamed Ennahda but the party has denied any hand in the shooting. Crowds have attacked several Ennahda party offices in Tunis and other cities in the past two days.

"Hope still exists in Tunisia," Fatma Saidan, a noted Tunisian actor, told Reuters at Belaid's funeral. "We will continue to struggle against extremism and political violence."

While Belaid had only a modest political following, his criticism of Ennahda policies spoke for many Tunisians who fear religious radicals are bent on snuffing out freedoms won in the first of the revolts that rippled through the Arab world.

Secular groups have accused the Islamist-led government of a lax response to attacks by ultra-orthodox Salafi Islamists on cinemas, theaters and bars in recent months.
