New insights into how to correct false knowledge

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

The abundance of false information available on the Internet, in movies and on TV has created a big challenge for educators.

Students sometimes arrive in classrooms filled with inaccurate knowledge they are confident is correct, indicating it is deeply entrenched in their memory.

According to Duke University researchers, educators might be able to help students overcome their misconceptions by correcting inaccurate information then having the students practice retrieving it from memory.

"Errors that are deeply entrenched in memory are notoriously difficult to correct," said Andrew Butler, a post-doctoral researcher in Duke's Department of Psychology & Neuroscience, who led a recent study of how students correct false knowledge. "Providing students with feedback is the first step because it enables them to identify the error and learn the correct information."

Recent research in cognitive science has shown it is possible to correct false knowledge with feedback -- a phenomenon known as the hypercorrection effect. When students answer a test question wrong, the more confident they are in their original answer, the more likely they are to remember the right answer if corrected.

However, the hypercorrection effect seems to contradict our common experience that it is very difficult to correct deeply entrenched false knowledge. For example, anyone who has changed phone numbers knows how hard it is to learn the new number because the old number keeps coming to mind.

The Duke-led study helps to resolve this paradox. The study showed that false knowledge held with high confidence is more likely to be corrected in the short-term, but also more likely to come back in the long-term if the correction is forgotten.

"The hypercorrection effect is an interesting new phenomenon that seemed to contradict much of what we know about how people's memory works," Butler said. "The findings from our study show that this apparent contradiction is really just the result how the dynamics of error-correction shift over time."

Along with co-authors Lisa Fazio, a psychologist at Carnegie Mellon University, and Elizabeth Marsh, an associate professor in Duke's Department of Psychology & Neuroscience, Butler wanted to better understand how the relationship between a person's confidence in a response and his ability to correct errors changes over time.

The researchers gave 50 Duke undergraduate students a 120-question test on basic science information, with questions including: What is stored in a camel's hump? How many chromosomes do humans have? What is the driest area on Earth? After answering each question, students rated their confidence in their response, and then received the correct answer as feedback. Half the students were retested six minutes later, while the other half were retested one week later.

Students who were retested immediately corrected 86 percent of their errors. As expected, their responses showed a hypercorrection effect -- they were more likely to correct errors that they had made with high confidence relative to low-confidence errors.

In contrast, students who were retested one-week later also showed a hypercorrection effect. However, these students only corrected 56 percent of their errors, indicating they had forgotten many of the correct answers that they had learned from the feedback.

When students forgot the correct answer over the one-week delay, the opposite of the hypercorrection effect occurred -- the higher their confidence in their initial error, the more likely they were to re-produce that same error on the final test.

"Although high-confidence errors may be easily corrected in the short-run, our findings suggest that one presentation of feedback is not enough to produce a long-lasting correction of deeply entrenched false knowledge," Butler said. "Without further practice, high-confidence errors seem to be more likely to return over time."

Does this finding indicate we are doomed to retain deeply entrenched false knowledge? Perhaps not. The authors suggest we should view the hypercorrection effect as a valuable opportunity.

One idea they propose is to capitalize on the hypercorrection effect by providing students with additional opportunities to retrieve the correct information.

"Giving students repeated practice with retrieving information has been shown to promote long-term retention of that information," said Butler, who has also conducted research on using testing to promote long-term retention of information. "If students practice retrieving the correct information, then they may be able to avoid reverting back to their deeply entrenched false knowledge."

The study, "The Hypercorrection Effect Persists Over a Week, but High-Confidence Errors Return," appeared in the December print edition of the Psychonomic Bulletin & Review.

Obama team returning money tied to casino owner

(AP) ? President Barack Obama's campaign is returning about $200,000 in contributions collected by family members of a Mexican casino owner who fled the U.S. after facing drug and fraud charges.

The Obama campaign said Monday it had decided to return the donations arranged by Chicago brothers Carlos Cardona and Alberto Rojas Cardona, who had begun raising money for the campaign and the Democratic National Committee last year.

The New York Times reported late Monday that the fundraisers are the brothers of casino owner Juan Jose Rojas Cardona, who skipped bail in Iowa in 1994 and has since been linked to violence and corruption in Mexico.

The campaign said it refunded the money raised by family members after the newspaper asked about the brothers' fundraising role. Obama campaign officials said they were identifying donations bundled by other people connected to Cardona, expected to be about $100,000, and would return those funds as well.

"On the basis of the questions that have been raised, we will return the contributions from these individuals and from any other donors they brought to the campaign," said Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt.

The newspaper reported that Gordon Fischer, a lawyer and the former chairman of the Iowa Democratic Party, had sought a pardon for Juan Jose Rojas Cardona from Iowa Gov. Chet Culver, a Democrat, but it was not granted.

Life After Grad School: Investing Your Money ? Adventures in ...

I seem to read a lot these days that, for my generation, a lot of the traditional ?markers? of adulthood are missing. Or they show up much later in life. Things like marriage, children, purchasing a new car, buying a house or an apartment instead of renting?these things simply aren?t inevitable for a lot of thirty- and even forty-somethings. Which might explain why, when I asked myself, ?How should I start to plan for retirement??, I had no clue where to begin.

For my mother?s generation, I think the answer was fairly simple: your husband will take care of it. Which was all right for some but didn?t work out so well for the ones who got divorced and then suddenly found themselves scrambling to get a handle on their finances. I?ll admit that until very recently, I really couldn?t comprehend the idea of saving for retirement. It was so far away (at least I hoped it was), and I was living hand to mouth, like most humanities grad students. I could barely put away a hundred dollars a month to pay my phone and Internet bills, much less sink a few hundred dollars into an investment account every month. Someday. But not now.

Well, someday?s kind of here, because I?m actually earning money now, and while there aren?t any guarantees, it looks like I might be on track to make a steady income for a while. Unfortunately my basic Internet searches on financial planning just served to confuse me more?even the ?financial planning for dummies?-type websites threw around terms and figures that I didn?t understand. So after a brief ?I?m a walking Lady Who Knows Nothing About Money stereotype? moment of depression I got in touch with a financial planning company and asked them what my options might be.

The company asked me some VERY personal questions that I wasn?t quite sure how to answer (How serious is your current relationship? Do you plan to have children within the next five years? Do you plan to marry? How much longer will you remain in Japan, and if you do leave, where will you go?). One thing about retirement planning?you?ll have to take stock of a lot of things, maybe before you?re really ready.

After doing a basic evaluation of my income and future plans, the company sent me a thick packet via registered mail?glossy booklets detailing financial plans that looked designed for people with lots and lots of money. People who, judging by the brochures, wore suits every day and had boats. I took a few days to think it over and then told them I would keep looking.

A U.S.-based financial adviser that my mother hooked me up with recommended a Roth IRA, one of those terms that I?d heard thrown around for years but had never fully understood. IRA stands for ?Individual Retirement Account,? and basically it means that you deposit a certain amount of money every month into a special account until you retire. As long as you don?t withdraw the money, it?s not taxable. And IRA funds can be invested in all manner of mutual funds that will accrue interest and make your money ?grow? instead of just sitting in a bank.

This is where it gets confusing, because I have no clue what kinds of funds or stocks I would want to invest in?I just want to plop my money somewhere and hope that it grows modestly until I?m around 70. And I don?t know the logistics of opening a Roth IRA when you?re living overseas and making your money in yen instead of dollars. Luckily my local bank seems ready and willing to explain everything for me, so I?ll let them give me some advice when I?m back in the States in May.

A few things I?ve learned from this (so far very brief) experience with trying to invest my money:

1. It?s never too early. The bank was pretty surprised when I asked about IRA?s?apparently most people start investing much later in life. Which might be all right if you?re making a six-figure salary or close to it, but if you?re like me and will probably never move out of a certain salary bracket (barring divine intervention or writing The Book of the Century), you need to start EARLY. Because it takes a long, long time to save up enough money even to live modestly after you retire. So even if it?s less than a hundred dollars a month?or less than fifty dollars a month?start putting money away as soon as possible.

2. Be realistic. Don?t sign up for an investment plan that demands a very high monthly contribution. You might think that you can realistically put away $300 a month, but the general advice is to take whatever you THINK you can save and cut it in half.

3. Don?t be afraid to ask the tough questions. Not just to a financial adviser?to yourself. Thinking seriously about money forces you to think seriously about a lot of other things?your marital / single status and what it means, your plans to have (or not have) kids, where you want to live, how long you plan to be at your current job, etc. Too many people wait too long to confront these questions, and sometimes by then they?re in a financial mess and it?s too late.

4. Explore a lot of options. Don?t let yourself be pressured?by family, a financial planning company, or anyone else?into a retirement plan that doesn?t feel right. In the end if it?s all too much you can just start by opening an extra savings account.

I guess planning for retirement is just one of many stages of becoming a grown-up. Which might explain why I now have the urge to run outside and hula hoop.

Fostering, Adopting, or Both? | Adoption Agencies

Some parents sign up just to do foster care, not desiring a long term commitment like adoption. Other parents are primarily interested in children who are available for adoption. Still others are willing to do both foster care and adoption. Whether you?re taking in foster children with the idea of a short term or a lifelong commitment, you?re probably going to have the experience of feeling sad when a child has to go home. On the flip side, you may have trouble at times creating attachments to some children who come in to your home. Understanding some things about attachment can help you make sense out of your emotions and get through them more easily.

?

One of the first foster care placements that we had was a little 6 week old infant named Brandon.

My husband I had a biological daughter already, but we had had a stillborn boy a little less than a year after my daughter had been born. This little foster baby, of course, made me revisit the idea of our stillborn child in full force. I attached to the little guy immediately and wanted to keep him forever. Around the same time, a long lost friend who shares (by coincidence) my name and my birthday contacted me out of the blue. She had just had a baby boy (he too was 6 weeks old) and guess what she and her husband named him? Brandon. It was another odd coincidence and I set up a date to see my friend a few weeks later.

?

Unfortunately, two weeks later, Brandon had gone back home. I wept uncontrollably for about an hour after he left. It wasn?t the kind of pain that I felt when we had a stillbirth, but losing Brandon after having him for a little over 10 days was still a little turbulent.

I had to go and visit my friend who still had her baby and recognize the fact that our Brandon had gone back to his birth mommy. It was during this placement that I realized the true complexities surrounding foster care. It was important that I treat the children in our care as though they are my own, but I need to be prepared to let go of them at the same time. With very young children, they may not even remember you years later or know that you ever cared for them. This can be a hard pill to swallow, but it?s a part of what?s involved in being a foster parent and it?s part of what makes foster parenting such a big opportunity for learning.

?

As a foster parent, there may be children who come into your home with problems that make it difficult for you to attach. You may find yourself feeling a distance between yourself and a foster child without knowing why. A lot of it may have to do with your own attachment style. Attachment is a word that?s really important to child psychologists. It?s hard to understand anything about the psychology of children without having some idea what attachment is and how it works. Essentially, children develop an attachment ?style? based off of parent-child transactions that take place from a child?s earliest days. Are parents consistent with feedings and changings? Are parents warm and loving or cold and uncaring? Do parents feed baby when baby isn?t hungry or neglect baby when she is? All of the transactions between parents and children add up to an attachment style that children have by the time they end up in foster care. Even young infants, like the 6 week old infant had an attachment style that had an effect on our lives.

?

Foster parents have an attachment style too. How your parents interacted with you plays a role in how you interact with others and whether you form strong bonds with people, whether you?re wary, or ambivalent when you form relationships. Your attachment style can conflict with a foster child?s attachment style sometimes. It may be uncomfortable, but if you realize this is happening, you can override your own attachment inclinations and still bond with your foster child.

?

Understanding your own way of attaching to the foster children you care for will also help you endure the pain of separation when foster children go back to their birth families. If you develop very strong bonds with children the first moment you lay eyes on them, you may have a lot of trouble letting go of them later. If you can endure the pain of separation and work with it, then your tendency to form strong attachments will help children feel safe enough to attach to you as well. But if you have trouble letting go, you may want to stick with placements that will primarily lead to adoption.

?

If you tend to be stand-offish when you first meet people, including foster children, you?re probably going to have to override this. Give foster children hugs even when you don?t feel like it. Chances are, after you get past the first few days, you?ll start to attach. But be aware that if this is your attachment style, you may feel angry or embittered after your foster children go back to their birth home. Try to keep this in check because it won?t bring the foster children back and it isn?t good for your health to carry around extra anger that isn?t necessary.

?

Whatever your attachment style, you?re probably going to feel a little sad when your foster children go back to birth parents. Do what you can to stay in touch with your foster children when this happens, but, if it isn?t possible, try to work with the pain of separation as an opportunity to learn something about yourself. Take deep breaths and cry when necessary. The pain doesn?t last forever. Foster parents who have experience dealing with their own losses will only be better equipped to help new foster children deal with theirs.
