NEWS RELEASE

Park University has announced its new Kansas City Leadership Academy, designed to groom young professionals for greater leadership roles in organizations, the community and beyond.

The Academy will be led by Kay Barnes, distinguished professor for public leadership in Park's Hauptmann School for Public Affairs and former mayor of Kansas City, Mo., and Don Wise, coordinator of nonprofit and community services and instructor of public administration at the Hauptmann School. The KCLA is a joint initiative of Park's Center for Leadership (founded by Barnes), the Downtown Council of Kansas City (Mo.) and the Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library. The Academy's eight sessions (including two one-day retreats) will include: individual data-gathering regarding current leadership strengths and weaknesses; history of leadership theory development; current trends and leadership skill development through group processes; and case studies and analyses of the challenges and opportunities for organizational development and civic engagement. Also included will be two opportunities to interact with leading scholars of the American presidency as part of the Library's Hail to the Chief series.

The inaugural Academy, which begins with a reception on Thursday, Sept. 20, and continues through December, is limited to 20 participants at a cost of $2,500 per person. My Latest Purchase From SHOP.CA

Now that SHOP.CA has finally launched (wasn?t the wait agonzing, talk about a tease!) what are you shopping for?

Last month I shared how? happy I was to find one of my favourite stroller brands, Britax, at SHOP.CA and how the free shipping and SHOP.CA Rewards beat competitors on this product.? I?ve also been tweeting and sharing on Facebook when there?s an awesome SHOP.CA sale that I think my readers should know about!? Back-to-School in particular brought Canadian shoppers a ton of great sales on clothing items.

In August, I was tasked (oh such a hard task!) with deciding what to purchase as my first actual product-review from SHOP.CA.

Do I get a leaf blower for my husband or a new outdoor toy for the kids? Both had great prices and of course came with SHOP.CA Rewards but in the end I decided it was time for something for ME.

Well, sort of.

The Cosmopolitan Medium Rectangular Storage Ottoman was my final choice!? One of my goals for the new school year is to reduce stressful mornings.? Now that I have 2 kids to get ready and out the door in the mornings (with a third on my hip!) I need to make our mornings as streamlined as possible.? One major? bone of contention between my kids and I is missing hats, gloves and shoes in the morning.? Where do they disappear to?

We have a large front entry way in our house but a very small closet.? This ottoman, with tons of storage space inside, is the perfect place for storing hats, gloves, scarves and other odds and ends that seem to go missing. My sister had advice for me too ? put baskets inside the ottoman to further organize the items!? Brilliant.

Now the kids have a storage place for their ?stuff?, a place to sit and put their shoes and boots on, and hopefully I have a calmer morning getting them all out the door.

Here?s my quick video review of the product itself so you can see just how big it is and how much room it has inside!? The Cosmopolitan Medium Rectangular Ottoman is available at SHOP.CA for $139.00 with FREE SHIPPING!

Disclosure: I am part of the SHOP.CA Super Shopper program and I receive special perks as part of my affiliation with this group. The opinions on this blog, as always, are my own.

Canada orders US soldier who fled war deported

By CHARMAINE NORONHA
Associated Press

TORONTO (AP) - Canada has ordered the deportation of a female soldier who fled the U.S. military in order to avoid the war in Iraq, officials said Thursday.

War Resisters Support Campaign spokeswoman Michelle Robidoux said that Citizenship and Immigration Canada has ordered Kimberly Rivera to leave the country by Sept. 20.

Rivera is meeting with her lawyers to determine her next step and was unavailable to comment, said Robidoux.

"We are very upset about this decision," said Robidoux. "The cases of war resisters are not being looked at properly. (Immigration Minister Jason) Kenney continues to intervene by telling immigration officers to red flag US soldiers who are applying for asylum as criminally inadmissible. We think that has tainted the whole process and the government should withdraw that directive."

Robidoux said they will likely call on Kenney to grant the family humanitarian and compassionate consideration and allow them to stay.

"Canada's immigration system is considered among the most fair and generous in the world. It is a matter of public record that Ms. Rivera has had multiple opportunities to make her case to stay in Canada," said Kenney's spokeswoman, Alexis Pavlich.

Rivera, a 30-year-old Army private, served in Iraq in 2006. She said she became disillusioned with the mission. She crossed the border into Canada while on leave in February 2007, after she was ordered to serve another tour there.

After arriving in Canada on leave, she applied for refugee status.

She currently lives in Toronto with her husband and four children. Her two youngest children were born in Canada.

In January of 2009, Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board ordered her and her family to leave the country or face deportation. Rivera appealed that decision.

Rivera's lawyer, Alyssa Manning, has argued in Canada's federal court that her client would likely face a court martial and jail time, possibly up to five years, if she is deported.

The War Resisters Support Campaign, which notes that there are approximately 200 Iraq war resisters in Canada, said two other Iraq war resisters who were deported, Robin Long and Clifford Cornell, faced year-long jail sentences upon their return.

Long was given a dishonorable discharge in 2008 and sentenced to 15 months in a military prison after pleading guilty to charges of desertion.

The lower house of Canada's Parliament passed a nonbinding motion in 2009 urging that U.S. military deserters be allowed to stay in Canada, but the Conservative government ignored the vote.

During the Vietnam War, up to 90,000 Americans won refuge in Canada, most of them to avoid the military draft. Many were given permanent residence status that led to Canadian citizenship, but the majority went home after President Jimmy Carter granted amnesty in the late 1970s.

Who Built That? Republicans Sidestep Government's Role

" We Built It" - those were the defiant words painted all around the Tampa Bay Times Forum during last night's Republican National Convention opener. Inside the hall, the message was delivered on massive signboards and by country singer Lane Turner. Speakers - like Virginia governor Bob McDonnell and Ohio's Gov. John Kasich - made knowing allusions to it in their speeches to the party faithful.

And they're right. The construction of the arena, which has been home to the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning since Oct. 20, 1996, was very much a group effort. The "we," in this case, includes local taxpayers, who put up $86 million for the cause, along with the Lightning organization, which chipped in the remaining $53 million.

The phrase is a play on President Obama's benign, if bungled, comments about the role government plays in creating an environment for private business to grow and thrive. On July 13 he said:

"If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business - you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."

The Romney campaign seized on the italicized bit, calling it proof the president believed all personal wealth was, and should be, tied to the whims of central government bureaucrats. On Aug. 16, a bakery in Virginia refused to serve Vice President Joe Biden because of the alleged slight.

But a turn of the phrase, from declaration to question - - "Who Built It?" or "Who rebuilds it after it breaks?" - tends to yield the same answer: "We" do.

"Every American deserves the opportunity of a limited, responsible government that performs its core functions well, and then gets the heck out of their way!" McDonnell said during his address last night.

McDonnell, though, should have few qualms with how Washington is spending American tax money. A recent Gallup poll showed that Virginia was home to more federal employees than any other state in the nation except neighboring Maryland.

A 2011 Bloomberg Government report showed that federal defense spending accounted for 13.9 percent of the state's GDP - that's $56.9 billion, the most in the nation, and equivalent to more than $7,000 per resident annually.

And when a terrible summer storm, called a "derecho," tore through the state earlier this summer, McDonnell turned immediately to Washington for money to help clean up the mess and rebuild infrastructure leveled by the squalls.

"We have determined that Virginia should meet all of the requirements for federal public assistance," the governor said. "Federal assistance is vitally important to help our localities recover significant costs associated with responding to the storms and keeping our citizens safe."

Last night, McDonnell sounded a different tune.

"The choice is clear," he told conventioneers, "the status quo of the entitlement society, or dynamic change to an opportunity society."

Just minutes before, Ohio's Gov. Kasich gave a peppy speech touting job growth in his state.

"I told you a minute ago that when we came into office, we were 48th in job creation," Kasich blared. "You know where we are today? We're fourth in American in job creation and No. 1 in the Midwest."

Kasich pegged the improvement to budget cuts he pushed through the state legislature, but the broader economic resurgence can be largely tied to the resurgent American auto industry, which has deep ties with suppliers in Ohio. Several independent reports say the auto industry was saved from crisis by a federal bailout that many Republicans opposed.

In 2010, it was Texas Gov. Rick Perry, then facing a primary challenge from Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, who told a Tea Party crowd protesting the president's stimulus spending bill that "if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that? But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."

The stimulus passed and Texas is still a part of the United States. Less than a year later, when thousands of wildfires were burning a path through the state's blighted central plains, Perry made an appeal to the federal government for help.

"Texas is reaching its capacity to respond to these emergencies and is in need of federal assistance," the governor said in an April 2011 statement. "I urge President Obama to approve our request quickly so Texans can continue receiving the resources and support they need as wildfires remain an ongoing threat."

And when the help didn't come at the rate and volume Perry requested, he went public with his frustration.

"There is a point in time where you say, hey, what's going on here?" he said. "You have to ask, why are you taking care of Alabama and other states? I know our letter didn't get lost in the mail."

Monitoring the Success of Internet Banner Advertising for Your ...

Get MORE Facebook Fans & Likes

Many people who use Internet banner advertising make a common mistake that costs them a lot of business. They think that their work is done once the banners have been posted on various websites. However, the work is just beginning. This is the point at which you will know whether your campaign is successful or not. If it is not, you will have the opportunity of revising it and making it better for your target audience.

There are several ways to monitor the effectiveness of Internet banner advertising. The first way to find out if your banner is successful or not is by checking on the number of times the ad has been displayed on the website that you have posted them on. Your banner ad cannot reach your target audience without having been displayed on the websites. Websites will usually display ads that are more popular with their target audience more often. You can therefore gauge just how popular your ads are from their display time on websites.

One of the most effective ways of knowing how successful your Internet banner advertising campaign is by checking on the click through rate of the banners. When you choose to use banners for your advertising campaign, your aim is to get as many people to your website as possible. This means that your banners must be able to draw people to your website. They can only do this by making people click on the ads and follow the links. These ads are considered successful if many people click on the advertisements.

You will also need to compare your profits to your cost. You will need to consider the amount of money that you have spent on designing and posting the websites and compare this amount to that which you have received as a result of people taking action. This means keeping track of the sales that you receive from the people who visit your website directly from the Internet banner ads.

Internet banner advertising is a highly effective way of ensuring that you drive targeted traffic to your website. However, without monitoring you will never know just how effective your campaign is. You will never be able to revise your advertising campaign and improve on it. You will therefore not be able to reach your full potential. You will end up spending money and not benefiting from it. Ensure that you monitor your campaigns constantly until you find that successful mix.

Why?s everybody so angry about Twitter ? and should you care?

6 hrs.

People have different reasons for being upset with Twitter right now, and those reasons really depend?on what type of Twitter user you are. Here are the people Twitter's changes are going to affect the most, and why?they're angry about the new rules.

The crux of why people are upset with Twitter is pretty simple: Twitter is?changing its Application Programming Interface (API)and closing off how third-party apps communicate with Twitter. For casual Twitter users, this means that Twitter controls what information apps can access on Twitter, how they access it, and how the apps shoots out the data on their ends. On the surface, the main goal is to keep Twitter clients consistent, and push ads equally throughout all of Twitter.

The Twitter developers who are worried about what the changes mean for their Business
Developers who build Twitter clients like?MetroTwit?or?TweetBot?are the most clearly affected by Twitter's new rules. In Twitter's new?API Terms, Twitter states that Twitter clients need to keep in line with Twitter's layout rules, which require tweets to be displayed in a single way, with all their buttons in the right places. From a visual point of view, all Twitter apps should essentially look the same. However, in a?blog post?back in June, Twitter also stated that developers should not, "build client apps that mimic or reproduce the mainstream Twitter consumer client experience." Essentially, this means Twitter doesn't want people building new Twitter clients.

Twitter has also instituted a user cap of 100,000 people for any app that uses the Twitter API, but they are giving a special allowance to any apps that already has over 100,000 users. When a new app gets more users that 100,000, it needs special permission from Twitter to continue on. This includes not just the Twitter clients that show your Twitter stream, but also apps that tap into the Twitter ecosystem like the aggregation tool?Storify?or the "what you did a year ago" webapp?Timehop. Essentially, if your app taps into Twitter for any reason, you're going to see changes.

From a strictly Twitter client point of view, the changes seem like they'll cut Twitter clients completely. However, in a blog post, Tweetbot developer Tapbots explains they'll?continue work their clients?(iPhone, iPad, and Mac), and the majority of the app will be unchanged. Twitterific developer Icon Factory?says the same thing.

Not all developers are so confident, and?several have sent letters to the FTC?requesting an investigation into possible antitrust issues that arise by Twitter forcing other apps out of the game.

Until we see how Twitter enforces these rules it's difficult to know exactly what to expect.

The Twitter power users who like third-party utilities

Twitter power users are going to see big changes in their Twitter clients, but many of the analytics tools they use will remain untouched. In fact, in Twitter's?blog post?on the issue, they specifically high-five the likes of?Crimson Hexagon,?Topsy,?Hootsuite, and others. In short, if you're using apps that are targeted at businesses, for data mining or otherwise, you're probably fine.

However, power users will likely see less customized clients built specifically for certain types of users. Lifehacker founder Gina Trapani sums it up on the?In Beta podcast:

I think the big thing people are upset about is that we're going to see fewer custom power user clients. Which really sucks for the power user who want the very specialized client who lets you mute keywords, or whatever.

The reason? With a new rules, developers might not put forth the effort to build specialized clients anymore. It could also mean that currently beloved clients will just give up. It's no fun playing in a playground with chains and locks on all the equipment. Since this hinges on how developers react, it's hard to judge exactly what the effect will be until Twitter starts enforcing these rules.

Twitter users who like services like Flipboard that plug into Twitter

The loudest outrage from most people is how Twitter's been tackling the way third-party services access Twitter. In a tiny way, this is about how?Tumblr, Instagram, and LinkedIn?users can't search for friends on Twitter any more.

More worrisome about the new API rules is how it might restrict apps like the popular social news app?Flipboard, which accesses tweets, but isn't a client itself. The worry comes from Rule 5a of the?Timeline display guide:

Tweets that are grouped together into a timeline should not be rendered with non-Twitter contents. Eg comments, updates from other networks.

Instapaper developer Marco Arment?talks about why this might matter in a blog post:

In other words, apps cannot interleave chronological groups of Twitter posts with anything else.

This is very broad and will bite more services and apps than you may expect. It's probably the clause that caused the dispute with LinkedIn, and why Flipboard CEO Mike McCue just left Twitter's board.

Closer to home for me, it affects Instapaper's "Liked By Friends" browsing feature, which will need to be significantly rewritten if I want it to comply. (If.)

Essentially, services that tap into your Twitter feed and regurgitate links into a new visual style could be blocked. This means magazine-style browsing apps like Flipboard?could?be cut off.

The likely reasoning from Twitter's point of view is simple. When you access links from who you follow on Twitter without ever going to Twitter itself, you can get the Twitter experience without ever looking at advertisements.

The optimistic Web nerds who want Twitter to be a platform, not a media company
When Twitter first launched, it was a wide-open, easy-to-develop-for platform that felt something like the wild wild west of internet communication. Now, Twitter is closing in on itself, and changing its overall approach from open platform for communication to media company. The reason? Money. (They're a for-profit company, so while the results are frustrating, it's silly to blame them for this.)?The Verge lays it out like so:

Creating a platform like Twitter is impossibly hard, but after years of fail whales, the company pulled it off. Monetizing a platform is harder still, and it looks like Twitter has taken the easier path: monetizing its social graph without sharing the wealth with the developers who helped build it.

The reason the social graph (who you follow/who follows you) is important from an advertising point of view is pretty simple: people use Twitter like they use a TV, they follow who they're interested in and that reflects a marketing potential. This makes direct advertising easy.

Twitter's original API was wide open, and out of it sprung all types of innovative apps and uses?the very same things that turned Twitter into the successful company it is today. The openness was the exact reason many of us started using the service in the first place. Twitter was a platform you could access in a variety of ways, and use for a number of different reasons. You could track celebrities, communicate with people, and share links with complete strangers. Users wanted to think of it as a platform similar to email as opposed to a media company (like Facebook). It's easy to see that Twitter needs to make money, but many people hoped (perhaps naively) that Twitter would still function as a platform. Not as yet another Facebook.

So, should you care?

Twitter's guidelines for some of these changes are still pretty vague, and interpretations of how Twitter will implement the changes are all over the place. Developers have six months to comply with the new API, and hopefully by then we'll have a better idea of how it's going to affect everyone.

So, should you care? That depends on how you use Twitter. The issues above effect different people in different ways, but even the casual user will see restrictions with the apps and clients they use.

17 beheaded after 'music party' in Afghanistan

The shooting deaths of two American soldiers in Kabul by an Afghan colleague are under investigation, with Afghan officials are saying it was an accident. NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

Updated at 11:25 a.m. ET: KANDAHAR, Afghanistan --?Afghan President Hamid Karzai accused the Taliban on Monday of beheading 17 villagers, including two women, in volatile Helmand province, in a gruesome attack recalling the dark days of the hardline group's rule before their 2001 ouster.

He ordered a full investigation into the "mass killing," which a local official said was punishment to revelers attending a party with music and mixed-sex dancing.

"This attack shows that there are irresponsible members among the Taliban," Karzai said in a statement.

In a separate incident, a rogue Afghan soldier killed two American troops in eastern Laghman, the NATO-led coalition said; 10 Afghan army soldiers were also killed in an attack on a checkpoint in Helmand, the Afghan government said.?

?The Taliban denied they had taken part in the beheadings, which Karzai's office said took place in Kajaki district in the southern province.?

Photos: A nation at a crossroads?

"The victims were killed for throwing a late night dancing and music party when the Taliban attacked," Nimatullah, governor for neighboring Musa Qala district, told Reuters.

NBC's Richard Engel discusses the troop "surge" in Afghanistan -- something touted as a success by the military but questioned by many Afghans and also some in the U.S. who worry the troops will leave in 2014 with Afghanistan as a failed state.

The beheaded bodies were found in a house near the Musa Qala district, about 46 miles north of the provincial capital Lashkar Gah, said Nimatullah, who only goes by one name.

The attack involving gunfire happened Sunday in a Taliban-controlled area of?the province, the Interior Ministry told The Associated Press.

In ultra-conservative Afghanistan, men and women do not usually mingle unless they are related, and parties involving both genders together are rare and highly secretive affairs.

For the Taliban, flirting, open displays of affection and the mixing of men and women are vehemently condemned.

According to witnesses of a major attack that killed 20 near Kabul in June, Taliban gunmen stormed a high-end hotel demanding to know where the "prostitutes and pimps" were.?

'No one really cares': US deaths in Afghanistan hit 2,000 in 'forgotten' war

During their five-year reign, which was toppled by U.S.-backed Afghan forces in 2001, sparking the present NATO-led war, the Taliban banned women from voting, holding most jobs and leaving their home unaccompanied by their husband or a male relative.

Though those rights have been painstakingly regained, Afghanistan remains one of the worst places on earth to be a woman.?

American soldiers shot
The two?U.S. troops killed in east Afghanistan on Monday were?the latest in a series of insider killings that have strained?trust between the allies ahead of a 2014 pullout by foreign combat?troops.

Taliban commander, 12 others killed by US drone strike

The deaths in Laghman province brought to 12 the number of foreign?soldiers killed this month, prompting NATO to increase security?against insider attacks, including requiring soldiers to carry?loaded weapons at all times on base.

General Martin Dempsey was not on board at the time of the rocket attack, but the damage forced him to use another plane for Tuesday's flight to Iraq. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

The deaths also come a week after U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman?Martin Dempsey visited Kabul to talk about rogue shootings and?urge Afghan officials to take tougher preventative action.

"ISAF troops returned fire, killing the ANA (Afghan National Army)?soldier who committed the attack,'' the NATO-led International?Security Assistance Force said in a statement.

What's leading Afghan troops to turn on coalition forces?

There have been 33 insider attacks so far this year that have led?to 42 coalition deaths. That is a sharp increase from 2011, when,?during the whole year, 35 coalition troops were killed in such?attacks, 24 of whom were American.

Afghan soldiers killed
On Sunday,?insurgents killed 10 Afghan soldiers and wounded four in an attack on a checkpoint in volatile southern Helmand province, provincial officials said.

MSNBC's Thomas Roberts talks to NBC's Atia Abawi and NBC Military Analyst General Barry McCaffery about the new military offensive against insurgents in Afghanistan.

Ahmadi, the provincial government spokesman, said?insurgents attacked the checkpoint in Washir district Sunday evening.?

Ahmadi did not provide details of the attack. He added that that the five missing soldiers left with their assailants but it was unclear if they were kidnapped or went voluntarily.

NBC News' Atia Abawi, and Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.?

Assad's forces accused of massacre near Syrian capital

ALEPPO, Syria (Reuters) - Syrian opposition activists accused President Bashar al-Assad's army of massacring hundreds of people in a town close to the capital that government forces recaptured from rebels.

About 320 bodies, including women and children, were found in houses and basements in the town of Daraya, southwest of Damascus, according to activists who said on Sunday most had been killed "execution-style" by troops.

Activists uploaded several videos to the Internet showing rows of bloodied bodies wrapped in sheets. Most of the dead appeared to be young men of fighting age, but at least one video showed several children who appeared to have been shot in the head. The body of one toddler was soaked in blood.

Due to restrictions on non-state media in Syria, it was impossible to verify the accounts independently.

Clashes are raging across Syria as the 17-month-old rebellion grows increasingly bloody, particularly in the northern city of Aleppo, where the army and rebels appear stuck in a war of attrition.

Fighting in Aleppo on Sunday was the heaviest in the past week, according to Reuters journalists on the ground.

Fighter jets dropped bombs and fired missiles on rebel-held districts in the south of Aleppo, Syria's largest city, as residents fled in panic. Reuters journalists there heard heavy explosions as clouds of black smoke rose a mile into the air.

Rebels say they control at least half the city of 2.5 million, but their hold is fragile as long as Assad's forces can unleash their air power against fighters who are comparatively lightly armed.

The uprising, which began as peaceful protests, has become a brutal civil war. United Nations investigators have accused both sides of war crimes but laid more blame on government troops and pro-government militia than on the rebels.

The killings in Daraya, a working class Sunni Muslim town that sustained three days of bombardment before being overrun by the army on Friday, raised the daily death toll to 440 people on Saturday, one of the highest since the uprising began, an activist network called the Local Coordination Committees said.

The official state news agency said: "Our heroic armed forces cleansed Daraya from remnants of armed terrorist groups who committed crimes against the sons of the town."

The death toll for the following day, Sunday, was more than 90, including civilians and fighters, according to another activist network, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

It said at least eight people were killed and dozens wounded on Sunday night when security forces shelled the southern town of Basra al-Sham in Deraa province, with the death toll likely to rise as many of the wounds were severe.

In Damascus, government helicopters hovered near the main Abbaside Square on Sunday and fired rockets and machineguns at eastern residential neighborhoods where rebels continued guerrilla attacks against loyalists, residents said.

Haitham, an activist in Damascus, said troops were also firing machineguns from roadblocks that encircle the suburbs.

"Ninety percent of the time they fire randomly at bystanders and homes. Rarely they hit rebels," he said.

"REGIONAL PLOT"

Assad, who met an Iranian parliamentary delegation in the capital on Sunday, said the crisis was the result of Western and regional states trying to crush Syria's role in the "resistance" against Western and Israeli domination in the region.

"What is happening right now is not just a plot directed against Syria but the region as a whole, of which Syria is a foundational stone," he was cited as saying by state news agency SANA.

The United Nations estimates that more than 18,000 people have been killed in the conflict that pits a mainly Sunni Muslim opposition against a ruling system dominated by the Assad family - members of the Alawite faith, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam.

Diplomatic efforts to stop the violence in Syria are stalled by a stalemate between Western countries, Gulf Arab states and Turkey - who all support the opposition - and Iran, Russia and China - who support Assad.

With veto-wielding Russia leading resistance to action against Assad, the U.N. Security Council remains deadlocked.

Egypt is seeking to arrange a four-way meeting with Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iran, the main regional players in the conflict. Iran, a Shi'ite power, is Assad's main backer, while Saudi Arabia is believed to be supplying weapons to the rebels.

Iran accuses its foes in the West and the Arab world of fuelling the conflict by arming the opposition. Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian welcomed Egypt's initiative.

"Iran has its own views about the political process in Syria and will put forth these views upon the formation of this committee," he said. "We see any foreign intervention, terrorist actions and armed movements against the wishes of the people of Syria."

The Iranian parliamentary delegation that met with Assad also visited Vice-President Farouq al-Sharaa. It was Sharaa's first public appearance in weeks, quashing activist rumors that he had defected to the opposition.

Buying a car at auction - All Things Automotive - Ex Isle Forums

I've spent a lot of time at car auctions this year, starting with a confluence of breakdowns in my circle. When folks saw the bargains I got, they asked me to help them get one, too. (Residents don't make much, have high debt, but often feel they have to look good "like real doctors")

I've been meaning to write up my lessons, experiences and tips in some sort of organized fashion, but I've realized that's not going to happen, so I'll just post brief patchwork bits, as they occur to me.

Here's a nice article from Edmunds on public auctions. I know a lot of it will seem confusing (don't worry, I'll explain the process), but at least it'll get some terms and industry practices out there (and best of all, it's not from me: I've had friends look at me like a conspiracy theorist, when I explain this stuff and details I use in my detective work on the car and other bidders)

Know your make/model and the reasons you want it.
Research the specific candidates in advance. Read not just the authoritative sources and review sites, but the enthusiast sites. Find out what kind of things commonly go wrong with that year/model. Research the competition, too! My wish list often changes dramatically after research

Two things that will make me *immediately* tell a friend they aren't ready:

1) being in love with a specific make. Chances are, others at the auction will be, too. Remember: dealers make money on quick turnover--"darlings" are worth much more to them than to a buyer who will drive the car for years. At my local auction, Hondas became the "darling" (when Toyota was dethroned) and a Passport consistently sold for twice the price of lower-mileage Isuzu Rodeos with better options and condition, though both are the exact same car, designed/built by Isuzu.

2) having too broad a range. I often I see a list of models that are nothing alike. Sometimes there's a logic there (esp. if you have two cars) but more often that logic falls apart on impartial examination.

Less 'known' brands (Buick, Oldsmobile) can go for pennies on the dollar. My dad got a 2005 Caddy in perfect condition for less (in 2012 dollars) than I paid for my first used beater in the 70s! (Caddy lovers don't shop auctions)

Make an inspection checklist for each candidate
You should have a base checklist, of course. There are some easy telltales of body/frame work or excessive wear that ANYONE can spot on any model. (Dealers can hide flaws due to their expected profit margin, but cars at auction rarely bother to replace tires/batteries, touch-up paint, etc.) Check the fluids. Look *under* the car and in wheel wells (a web- or cell-cam helps) Inspect the interior (I'll list tips) and make sure ALL the electrical comfort features work (a good sign of a well maintained car, and often an expensive pain to fix after purchase) Take the test drive seriously -- most drivers have no idea what to look for. Use a $25 bluetooth OBD reader and the free Torque applet to read the past failures recorded in the car's computer (or see if that was wiped to hide them!)

Beyond that you should have a specific list for each car. If the VIN history shows flood or rust prone areas, check the affected parts. Very often, cars with a bad reputation for a certain part may only have 5% (expensive) lemons that you should avoid, while 95% are perfectly fine. know what recalls are in effect--a problem that a dealer will immediately fix isn't really a problem. (A friend knowingly bought a car with bad rear-end rust for almost pocket change, and then drove it to a dealer, who paid him several thousand dollars under a recall buyback because it was "beyond fixing") Quite a few known model defects show up by a certain (early) mileage or not at all, others can be seen on a cursory inspection, if you know where to looks -- as enthusiast sites will tell you.

Be willing to invest several weeks. Wait for the right car/bargain. There's often significant rollover from week to week, so there may not be anything exciting each week. Don't hesitate to check out other makes/models, just because you can -- no saleman pressure here! You can go to a local library and do research before bidding on an unexpected find. My auctioneer has real-time internet bidding -- helpful if you're prone to bidding frenzy (I'm not), and esp convenient for their Saturday morning "second chance" auction for cars that didn't sell at the main Wed. evening auction. If a sale fell through or a reserve wasn't met, you may get a better deal at home in your bunny slippers

While I can't overemphasize the benefits of KNOWING cars (bring an expert if you can), in my experience, you can weed out 95% or more of the bad auction cars without having any real idea how cars work at all, especially on bank repos and new car trade-ins. They don't invest time and money in hiding flaws. (Used car dealers may -- so know the seller!)

Be reasonable in your expectations
There are few guarantees in life. Even a dealer's guarantee usually only lasts a few months. It's a sad fact that people who are strapped for cash often feel they can't "afford to take a chance", when in fact, they can't afford the convenience of a sure thing. When they chase bargains, those often turn out to not be bargains at all.

Whatever you're willing to pay a dealer, you can probably get that car at auction for half that. Set the other half aside (mentally) for repairs. If you properly inspect the car before buying, it's highly unlikely that you'll spend anywhere near that in the next 2 years. (dealer-bought cars will need repairs in time, too)

If you have a bit of extra cash, it actually gets to be a cheap hobby. I once bought a SUV for the summer, decided I didn't want it, spent a Saturday afternoon cleaning it up and resold it at a profit at the following week's auction -- all without driving it off the auction lot. (Note: I politely explained my problem to the auctioneer and asked permission to park it. Don't try to pull a fast one.)

In the process, I learned everything I need to know about SUVs (and why they're wrong for me), but if my needs hadn't changed, I'd have happily driven it until a "peak sales" month (like tax refund season) when I could have covered not just my auction fees (as I did) but MA tax/insurance too. In many states, buying temporary cars is extremely practical, but MA tax rules put a damper on it.

There may be a temptation to buy "more car" instead of banking the savings. BMWs, Jaguars, etc. often go for Toyota prices because the small dealers aren't familiar with fixing them. You may be getting a repo bargain or you may end up facing a big repair bill in a year (perfectly normal for a Jag), and realize that you can't "afford" such a fancy car (but you can often resell/trade at a profit)

Jets get no TD again in 17-12 loss to Panthers

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) ? Mark Sanchez looked pretty good for nearly three quarters. He just couldn't get the New York Jets into the end zone ? again.

Tim Tebow had the play of the game, but also couldn't get that elusive preseason touchdown for the Jets.

Tebow got the fans fired up with a dazzling 20-yard run in the fourth quarter, but threw an interception three plays later and the Carolina Panthers held on for a 17-12 victory Sunday night.

The Jets (0-3) still have not scored a touchdown through three preseason games, an alarming display of ineptitude even though the games don't count. But Sanchez and the starters will not play Thursday night in the preseason finale at Philadelphia, so they certainly have a lot to work on before the regular-season opener against Buffalo on Sept. 9.

Sanchez played well into the third quarter, but got no help from his receivers who dropped a few passes. He finished 11 of 18 for 123 yards and an interception.

Tebow faced a third-and-16 from the Jets 34 and ran around in the backfield, eluded a tackle attempt by Ryan Van Bergan and then took off and slipped through a few other tackle attempts by the Panthers (2-1) before being taken down for a 20-yard gain by Reggie Smith. Tebow pumped both fists and yelled at the crowd chanting "Tee-boww! Tee-boww!" But three plays later, Tebow threw an easy interception to Smith.

Tebow got the Jets in scoring position again in the closing moments, again with the fans chanting his name, but threw four straight incompletions from the Panthers 27 to end the game. He was 4 of 14 for 55 yards and the interception.

While the Jets (No. 17 in the AP Pro32) didn't get into the end zone, two fans nearly did. Two men ? wearing only underwear and sneakers ? were tackled by security behind the end zone before they could get onto the field of play. One was handcuffed quickly and led off the field, while the other struggled for a few minutes before being led away

Cam Newton was held mostly in check by the Jets, going 6 of 15 for 60 yards, but he got the Panthers (No. 20) into the end zone with a touchdown pass to Louis Murphy.

Backup Derek Anderson put Carolina ahead to stay with a 1-yard touchdown toss to Gary Barnidge, making it 17-12 with 11:31 left in the game.

Sanchez was done in on consecutive plays by his receivers not holding onto the ball. First, on second-and-10 from the Jets 38, Sanchez hit Santonio Holmes in the mask and the receiver couldn't corral the pass. On the next play, Sanchez hit Stephen Hill in the chest, but the rookie couldn't control the ball and it bounced off his arms and into the hands of cornerback Captain Munnerlyn.

Five plays later, Newton connected with Murphy, starting for the injured Steve Smith, for a 9-yard touchdown that put the Panthers up 10-9 with 1:16 left in the opening half.

Jonathan Stewart was injured on the drive, hurting his right ankle when he took a handoff and went down the right sideline for 7 yards before he was knocked out of bounds on a hard hit by LaRon Landry. Stewart stayed down for a few moments before being helped to the bench. After trainers looked at Stewart's right leg, the running back was carted to the locker room ? but was smiling at his teammates as he headed into the tunnel.

The Jets got the ball with 1:11 left and two timeouts and ran just two plays, preferring not to go for a score ? as the crowd at MetLife Stadium booed loudly.

Tebow came in the game for the Jets in the third quarter, and couldn't get much going, either. On second-and-goal from the 12, he was nearly picked off by David Nixon, who read the play all the way and stepped in front of Tebow's toss for Dedric Epps but dropped the ball ? or he would have had a clear path to the end zone.

Two plays later, Folk kicked a 30-yarder to give the Jets a 12-10 lead with 1:48 left.

The Jets lost three key players to injuries as tight ends Dustin Keller (hamstring) and Josh Baker (right knee) and linebacker David Harris (ankle) all left in the first half. Baker appeared to sustain the most serious injury in the second quarter when he was hit on the right knee by a Panthers defender while trying to catch a pass from Sanchez in the end zone. Baker stayed down for several minutes, was helped to the sideline and then carted to the locker room.

Olindo Mare's 33-yard field goal midway through the opening quarter put the Panthers up 3-0 on their first drive of the game, helped in part by a pass interference call on Jets linebacker Bart Scott that put the ball in New York territory.

The Jets came right back and tied it on Nick Folk's 46-yard field goal on their opening offensive drive.

Josh Brown, competing with Folk for the Jets' kicking job, made a 34-yarder with 6:51 left in the first half to give New York a 6-3 lead.

Guest Blogger: Improving Curb Appeal with Landscape Pavers

Guest Blogger #638, Entry #1515, August 25, 2012

There are few things more satisfying to the handy homeowner than watching a DIY project reach culmination, resulting in a space that is more functional and beautiful than before, and especially when it comes to adding curb appeal. And when it comes to addressing a barren yard populated by nothing more than dead grass and a few overgrown shrubs, there?s a lot you can do to spruce up your outdoor space, adding some curb appeal in the front yard along with an outdoor room behind the house that is fit to host your guest in style and accommodate your children?s backyard play sets. But once you?ve laid your sod and put in an order for plants and garden furniture, there?s a step you should take in between, literally. Adding stepping stones and pavers will help to complete the look of your landscaping in a number of ways, and here are just a few options when it comes to utilizing them.

pavers landscaping

Pavers can beautify your outdoor home

Increasing curb appeal with pathways

People most often associate the use of pavers with creating simple pathways across an expanse of grass (so that nobody has to dirty their shoes getting from one area of the yard to another). And if you have a large space and you?re not keen on pouring concrete paths, this is a great alternative that is easy to pull off. You can simply nestle pavers into the lawn if you want a quick fix, but you might also consider cutting out a swath of sod where your pathway will go, filling it in with gravel or river rocks, and then placing the pavers for a look that is far more pronounced. These ideas can work in both the front and back of your house as an alternative to concrete.

But there are actually a lot more uses for paving stones. For example, you can lay them out on a grid to create a level patio space that is a lot more appealing than a concrete slab. And with so many options for colors, sizes, and finishes when it comes to pavers, you could get really crafty planning out a complex mosaic or an artsy, organic installment for a totally unique patio surface. You could even create several small patio areas connected by pathways to lead visitors from the grilling area to the koi pond to the hammock and then over to the kids play area.

eco-driveway

Intersperse grass with pavers for an eco-friendly driveway.

Using pavers with plants & shrubs

Of course, you can also use them in concert with your planting efforts. For example, you can create boundary lines around islands of plant life in your yard, containing mounds of dirt that will soon be teeming with trees, shrubs, and flowers amidst the grassy sea of your yard. Heck, you could even use them to create a line of demarcation around the swath of synthetic turf that you use for putting practice. But you might also use some types of pavers to create retaining walls for raised beds or even free-standing planters placed throughout your yard. The wonderful thing about pavers is that they provide both utility and beauty to your space. And considering that they are both easy to obtain and easy to install, the average homeowner will no doubt find tons of uses for them when it comes to landscaping.

Breivik, survivors welcome Norway prison term

OSLO, Norway (AP) ? It was during breaks between marathon video game sessions in his mother's apartment in Oslo that Anders Behring Breivik drafted his complicated and chilling plan. He would kill indiscriminately with explosives and guns, surrender to authorities if he survived, then prove himself sane in court ? all to publicize a manifesto accusing Muslims of destroying European society.

By any account, it went exactly to plan. A court ruled Friday that Breivik was sane when he killed 77 people, most of them teenagers, in attacks that shook Norway to its core.

"His goal was to be declared sane, so on that point he is satisfied," Breivik's defense lawyer, Geir Lippestad, said.

The Oslo district court found the 33-year-old right-wing extremist guilty of terrorism and premeditated murder for the twin attacks on July 22 last year. Breivik first bombed government headquarters, killing eight people, before going on a shooting massacre on Utoya island that left 69 dead at a summer camp for young members of the governing Labor Party.

Prosecutors had asked for an insanity ruling, which Breivik rejected as an attempt to deflate his radical anti-Muslim views. He smiled with apparent satisfaction when the five-judge panel declared him sane and sentenced him to a 21-year prison sentence that can be extended for as long as he's considered dangerous to society. Legal experts say that likely means he will be locked up for life.

"He has killed 77 people, most of them youth, who were shot without mercy, face to face. The cruelty is unparalleled in Norwegian history," Judge Arne Lyng said. "This means that the defendant even after serving 21 years in prison would be a very dangerous man."

In his final words, Breivik regretted not killing more people, apologizing to other "militant nationalists" for not achieving an even higher death toll. He said he wouldn't appeal the ruling because that would "legitimize" a court he said got its mandate from a political system that supports multiculturalism.

Prosecutors also said they would not appeal, bringing the legal process for Norway's worst peacetime massacre to an end and providing closure for victims' families and survivors, who have had to endure weeks of testimony from Breivik describing the victims as traitors for embracing immigration.

"I am very relieved and happy about the outcome," said Tore Sinding Bekkedal, who survived the Utoya shooting. "I believe he is mad, but it is political madness and not psychiatric madness," Bekkedal said. "He is a pathetic and sad little person."

From Europe's far right, the reaction was mixed. Some argued that Friday's verdict played into their core beliefs, though they have spoken out against his violent rampage.

"It was obviously wrong what he did, but there was logic to all of it," said Stephen Lennon, the 29-year-old leader of the English Defense League, an anti-Muslim group. "By saying that he was sane, it gives a certain credibility to what he had been saying. And that is, that Islam is a threat to Europe and to the world."

Frank Franz, a spokesman for the German far-right party NPD, distanced his party from Breivik.

"We consider his deeds to be those of a murderer, it's as simple as that," Franz told AP. "For us, it had nothing to do with politics."

During the trial, Breivik said the reason for his massacre was to draw attention to a manual of far-right terrorism that he released on the Internet just before the attacks. In it, he predicted that the government would try to cast him as an "insane, inbred, pedophile Nazi loser" if brought before a court.

Breivik's lawyers say he is planning to write new books from Oslo's high-security Ila Prison, where he has been held in isolation since his arrest and where he will likely also serve his sentence. He has access to a computer there but no Internet connection. His lawyers say he has already exchanged letters with supporters, but prison staff said they can stop mail encouraging illegal acts or the creation of criminal networks.

Asked whether he thought Breivik had achieved his desired outcome in the legal case, Prosecutor Svein Holden said: "I don't think Breivik's wishes have had an impact on the court."

Since Breivik admitted to the attacks, his sanity was the key issue to be decided by the trial, with two psychiatric teams reaching opposite conclusions. One gave Breivik a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia, a severe mental illness that would preclude imprisonment, while the other found him narcissistic and dissocial ? having a complete disregard for others ? but criminally sane.

The court criticized the psychiatric assessment that found Breivik insane, saying his perception of being a commander in a civil war can be explained in the context of a "fanatic and right-wing extremist view of the world" rather than as delusions of a sick mind.

It also found his controlled behavior while planning and carrying out his complex plot "difficult to reconcile with an untreated form of paranoid schizophrenia."

The son of a Norwegian diplomat and a nurse who divorced when he was a child, Breivik had been a law-abiding citizen until the attacks, except for a brief spell of spray-painting graffiti during his youth.

According to Breivik's manifesto, he plotted for nearly nine years to carry out his attacks, but prosecutors said he only started planning terror after moving back with his mother in 2006. He withdrew from friends and played the video game "World of Warcraft" for 16 hours a day.

Breivik joined a pistol club and started acquiring weapons and explosives, legally, for his attacks. In the spring of 2011, he moved into a farm where he tested his explosives and made the final preparations for his "operation."

Breivik testified during the trial that he expected to be killed by police. Instead, their bungled response allowed him to hunt down panicked teenagers on Utoya for more than an hour before police arrested him.

A boat carrying a SWAT team to Utoya was overloaded and stalled, while Norway's only police helicopter wasn't used because its crew was on vacation.

Norway's justice minister and police chief both resigned in the aftermath and some critics even called on the prime minister to step down.

The court didn't believe Breivik's claims of belonging to a secretive network of "Justiciar Knights," or "Knights Templar." Investigators say it doesn't exist.

The trial could not answer whether the network was a delusion ? Breivik insisted it exists ? or an attempt by him to inspire like-minded to form such a network.

His manifesto spelled out the order's ranks and greeting ? a clenched-fist salute that he flashed at the start of Friday's hearing. It also contained chilling advice for jailed members.

"When incarcerated, the Justiciar Knight should do everything in his power to escape from prison," he wrote. If successful, the "knight" should plot between three to five assassinations as a "bonus operation."

Lesotho rugby federation launched | Sunday Express

Mikia Kalati

MASERU ? Rugby will be a success in Lesotho.
That was the message from the Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR), during yesterday?s official launch of the rugby association in Lesotho.
The federation was recently recognised as an affiliate member of the Lesotho Sports and Recreation Commission (LSRC).
Speaking at the launch held at Lesotho High School grounds, the federation?s vice-president, Fetang Selialia, told the Sunday Express that the turn-out from both youngsters and those who have already been involved in the sport was impressive.
?I never expected people to come in such big numbers, it really shows that we started on a high note and the future is bright for rugby hopefuls,? he said.
?The establishment of the Maseru Kings, the local rugby team that has been competing in the Eastern Free State leagues, has led the way for rugby fanatics in this country and we want to see the sport growing even bigger in the coming months,? Selialia said.
He said more focus will be on developing youngsters under the age of 18, after introducing the youth development programme on the same day.
Selialia added: ?At the moment facilities remain a challenge but the Minister of Sports, Ntate Thesele Maseribane, is keen to help us grow the sport. He had a meeting with us and has promised to help put the needed structures in place.?
Teams from South Africa also graced the celebrations, while Selialia said the members of the Botswana rugby association who attended the event came to give a helping hand to their Lesotho counterparts.
He applauded the support from the corporate sector and noted that telecommunication giant, Econet-Telecom-Lesotho and Castle Lager have played a big part in helping improve rugby.

Ethiopia to bury late Prime Minister Meles on September 2

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopia's former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, who died on Monday after a long illness, is to be buried in a state funeral on September 2, the government said on Thursday.

Meles' death at 57 in a Brussels hospital left a gaping hole in Ethiopian politics and deprived Western powers of a trusty ally in the fight against Islamist militants in the Horn of Africa.

Thousands of mourners, many holding candles, gathered to witness Meles' casket arriving in the capital Addis Ababa late on Tuesday. His body is now lying in his private residence as funeral preparations are made.

Acting prime minister Hailemariam Desalegn will run the country until scheduled elections in 2015, a government spokesman said. He is due to be sworn in the coming days.

Guerrilla fighter Meles became one of the central political figures on the continent after toppling Mengistu Haile Mariam's military junta in 1991.
