NEWS RELEASE

Park University has announced its new Kansas City Leadership Academy, designed to groom young professionals for greater leadership roles in organizations, the community and beyond.

The Academy will be led by Kay Barnes, distinguished professor for public leadership in Park's Hauptmann School for Public Affairs and former mayor of Kansas City, Mo., and Don Wise, coordinator of nonprofit and community services and instructor of public administration at the Hauptmann School. The KCLA is a joint initiative of Park's Center for Leadership (founded by Barnes), the Downtown Council of Kansas City (Mo.) and the Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library. The Academy will provide attendees with a combination of the latest scholarship in leadership studies, plus practical hands-on guidance in achieving executive excellence.

The Academy's eight sessions (including two one-day retreats) will include: individual data-gathering regarding current leadership strengths and weaknesses; history of leadership theory development; current trends and leadership skill development through group processes; and case studies and analyses of the challenges and opportunities for organizational development and civic engagement. Also included will be two opportunities to interact with leading scholars of the American presidency as part of the Library's Hail to the Chief series.

The inaugural Academy, which begins with a reception on Thursday, Sept. 20, and continues through December, is limited to 20 participants at a cost of $2,500 per person. Academy graduates will receive a Leadership Academy Certificate of Achievement and 2.4 Continuing Education Units from Park. Undergraduate/graduate credit also is available.

Additional information and applications can be viewed at www.park.edu/cfla/. For more information, e-mail leadership@park.edu or contact Barnes at kay.barnes@park.edu or (816) 559-5644.
