'Sharknado' third airing gets more viewers than the first two

By Tony Maglio

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The "Sharknado" storm continues to build: the third time proved to be the charm for the made-for-TV movie about a tornado full o' sharks over the weekend with 2.1 million.

In fact, Saturday night's third airing of "Sharknado" was the most-watched original movie encore in Syfy history.

The movie aired during an all-day "Sharkathon" festival which also featured "Sharktopus," "Two-Headed Shark Attack" and "Swamp Shark."

The encore telecast earned 1.9 million viewers, which was 500,000 more than its premiere. But this is not the end for the little movie with big sharks in an even bigger storm.

On Friday, there will be a special midnight screening of "Sharknado" in more than 200 select theaters nationwide. "Sharknado" will have its final airing of the summer on August 22, leading into the premiere of Original Movie "Ghost Shark."

"Sharknado 2" will hit New York City in July 2014 on Syfy.

Mayor denounces state reduction in CTA funding as ?wrong-headed?

Updated: July 31, 2013 2:19AM

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday denounced as ?wrong-headed? a reduction in the state subsidy for reduced fares that will cost the CTA $14 million in sorely needed annual funding.

Emanuel and CTA President Forrest Claypool ruled out another round of fare hikes or service cuts. They simply vowed to lobby the Illinois General Assembly to restore the $14 million subsidy during the fall veto session.

?There are mandates from the state as it relates to providing discounted or free rides and yet, the resources ? $14 million ? was cut,? the mayor told a news conference at a CTA bus garage called to tout a $10 million crackdown on absenteeism.

?I would not call it unfortunate. I would call it wrong-headed?.When you have these mandates which are right, the state should not be making cuts in providing the resources?I would hope the state would step up and play a productive role in fulfilling their obligation to the CTA.?

Claypool noted that the $14 million reduction comes on top of ?annual additional burdens? from Springfield tied to 2008 legislation governing CTA pension funds and the agency health care trust.

?We have to absorb those blows every year as well,? he said.

Even before the $14 million cut, the state subsidy covered ?only a fraction? of the $100 million cost of providing discounted and free rides. Now, it?s ?half of what it was? a year ago, he said.

?We?re asking Springfield for recognition. Don?t make our lives worse. We?re not asking you to bail us out or anything like maybe in the past. But please don?t make the problem worse,? the CTA president said.

When Claypool was asked whether a fare hike or service cuts would be needed to absorb the $14 million cut, Emanuel answered for him.

?No,? the mayor said.

Afterwards, Claypool repeated the company line.

Asked how he would make up the $14 million difference, the CTA president said, ?We just have to do the best we can?..We work hard every day to cut our costs and bring in revenue outside the system. Higher advertising. More concessions. Reduce our costs to things like supply chain and absenteeism.?

Although Emanuel and Gov. Pat Quinn have had their differences, the mayor has an ally in Quinn when it comes to restoring the $14 million subsidy.

The governor?s assistant budget director Abdon Pallasch noted that Quinn ?supported state funding for senior fares? with a $34 million line item in his state budget. The General Assembly cut it in half ? to $17 million, all but $3 million for the CTA.

WHITE HOUSE, Tenn.--Revolution Church spent the month of July working on Serve the City.? The congregation is doing various community service projects and their final one is Project Restoration. It is an extreme home makeover for the TC and Matt Bush.

The Bush family lost four children in the last six years. The couple has been married for more than a decade, and lost their first son Wayne in 2006. Wayne was stillborn. They miscarried their daughter, Serenity later that year.

The Bush's 3-year-old son, Casey drowned in their pool while in the care of a family-friend in April 2011.

The couple's fourth child, Angel? was miscarried last summer right before they discovered black mold in their Cottontown house.

Pastor Joe Everette said, " They've had a string of tragedies that I can't do nothing to fix, but this I can fix."

Revolution executive pastor Joe Everette is also a general contractor. He and the congregation decided to fix the Bush's home . TC and Matt Bush were living in their garage, due to mold infestation. The couple worked on the damage when they could afford it, and when they were not volunteering at the church.

Pastor Everette said the couple never once asked for help, but 100 volunteers turned out this weekend to help restore the house.?

"That's what? Project Restoration is about...we're restoring this house, so that the family can be restored."

? TC and Matt Bush said, " Thank you is not enough. It's amazing to be surrounded by people that just want to help."

Tune into Fox 17 next weekend for the final unveiling of the Bush's home.

6 Cornerbacks Who Could Become Breakouts Stars in the 2013 NFL Season

As the NFL season approaches, I?m looking at the rising stars in each position. Rather than focusing on rookies (which I?ve already done) or rehashing familiar stories about veterans and established stars, I?m turning my attention to players for whom 2013 might be their best season ever.

Here are 6 cornerbacks to watch out for this season:

Brandon Boykin (Philadelphia Eagles)
It?s hard to imagine a more versatile cornerback than Boykin. While he doesn?t rack up the tackling stats that some others do, he?s indispensable on special teams as a kickoff returner. His ability to switch back and forth between these two roles, and to contribute consistently in both, is a rare gift. Because he relies on quickness and not on bulk, he?ll improve dramatically as he masters the rhythms of the NFL. If he?s allowed to take some chances this year, in his second pro season, he?ll shine.

Ron Brooks (Buffalo Bills)
Brooks is the longest long shot on my list, and he?s here for one main reason. In a single game against Jacksonville last year ? a game in which the then-rookie didn?t start ? he recorded ten tackles and three blocked passes, many of them while enduring an mid-game injury. One amazing game doesn?t make a star, but Brooks has other things going for him, especially the fact that he played quarterback in high school, which has given him an instinct for where passes and receivers are going to travel. If the Bills give him the opportunity to develop, he could have a breakout season.

Nolan Carroll (Miami Dolphins)
Carroll is most familiar as the guy who got intentionally tripped on the sidelines by a Jets coach, but it?s time to start recognizing him as one of the quickest-thinking cornerbacks in the NFL. While he?s not as hard of a hitter as others in the position, his speed and his ability to read an offense help him take opponents by surprise. The Dolphins promoted him to a starting role last season, and he excelled so much that they?ll almost certainly keep him there.

Janoris Jenkins (St. Louis Rams)
It?s hard to believe this is only Jenkins?s second season in the NFL, because he already talks and plays like a veteran. He?s stepped up as a leader on the Rams? defense, mentoring rookies and admirably setting aside past struggles with the law. As cornerbacks go, he?s the perfect package: he?s a reliable tackler and a showstopping pass defender. This season, it?s unlikely he?ll score two touchdowns in the same game like he did against Arizona, but he?ll probably bring a more well-rounded game and contribute more to the Rams in between highlight reel appearances.

Captain Munnerlyn (Carolina Panthers)
A short, swift fireplug of a player, Munnerlyn returned from injuries to own the left cornerback position for the Panthers last season. He?s benefited hugely from the consistency of four seasons in Carolina. He might get lost on another team, but the Panthers recognize his talent for defending passes. He scored two spectacular touchdowns off of interceptions last season. It?s such a delight to see him pick off a pass and run, and we?ll likely get to watch him do it a few times this year.

Sean Smith (Kansas City Chiefs)
Smith is one of the many reasons why the Chiefs are shaping up to become one of the most formidable teams in the NFL this year. When Kansas City lured him away from Miami with a sweet contract, the wisdom looked questionable, but I think Smith is a better fit for the Chiefs than the Dolphins. He?s a big, athletic player, the kind who can knock an unsuspecting wide receiver down with his little finger. And what some people call inconsistency, I see as the potential for making huge plays, especially on a team where his body type and catching ability are unique among cornerbacks.

Wife goes into labor, Mahan withdraws from tourny

OAKVILLE, Ontario (AP) ? Hunter Mahan has withdrawn from the RBC Canadian Open after his wife went into labor.

Mahan was the tournament leader at 13 under after 36 holes and had yet to tee off for the third round Saturday.

Mahan took the lead Friday with an 8-under 64 to improve on his 5-under 67 from the first round.

His sudden departure now puts the spotlight on John Merrick, who finished the second round two strokes back of Mahan after tying the course record with a 62 at Glen Abbey Golf Course. Merrick will play alone.

Mahan's start time had initially been set for 1:30 p.m. ET before play was suspended for 80 minutes by weather. He had been rescheduled to tee off at 2:50 but never made it to the course.

Personalized Financial Planning Service LearnVest Raises $16.5M ...

LearnVest, a personalized financial planning program, has raised $16.5 million in strategic funding from existing investor Accel Partners, and new investors: American Express Ventures; Claritas Capital; Ed Mathias, founding member of The Carlyle Group; and Todd Ruppert, Former CEO & President of T. Rowe Price Global Investment Services. This brings the startup?s total funding to $41 million.

Founded by Alexa Von Tobel, LearnVest originally debuted back in 2009 at TechCrunch50 as an online guide aimed at teaching women to become more financially savvy. As we wrote a few years back, the startup was Suze Orman blended with personal finance site Mint.com. Last year, LearnVest pivoted slightly to aim for both men and women, and became a full-fledged investment advisor.

As Von Tobel explains, LearnVest is now more like Weight Watchers for your finances. The company offers the LearnVest Action Program, which is a seven, step by step program that takes you from cutting expenses to budgeting for goals to investing your money. All users get a certified financial planner who gives them specialized attention based on their financial needs and goals. Von Tobel adds that each of these advisors has gone through training and is empathetic to all financial situations. Financial plans starting at $89 for the budget version. The five-year plan is $349 and the portfolio builder is $599.

From the sounds of it, it looks like LearnVest may get a huge marketing boost from AmEx to push its financial planning product. ?We believe strongly in the mission of LearnVest Planning to provide accessible financial advice,? said Harshul Sanghi, Managing Partner, American Express Ventures, in a release. ?As we seek to expand our portfolio of products across American Express, we believe LearnVest Planning can be an important partner in helping us to bring customers more convenient, affordable and transparent ways to manage their money.?

With headquarters in New York City, the company has now opened a west coast office in Phoenix, Ariz., to serve as a hiring and training hub for the company?s team of financial planners. In addition to the investment, LearnVest Planning is debuting Workplace Solutions, a financial wellness platform that companies can offer as an employee benefit.

Mathias and Ruppert are advisors, as is Susan Lyne, AOL?s Brand Group CEO and Vice Chairman of Gilt Groupe (and our boss?s boss?s boss); and Ann Sardini, former CFO of Weight Watchers.

There are plenty of startups that want to disrupt wealth management, including Wealthfront, Betterment and of course, Mint. But Von Tobel says that LearnVest Planning is really focused on a broader demographic because the program triages individuals for financial health and then gives them an action plan. She believes that LearnVest is the most hands-on financial planning program you?ll find.

Our mission at LearnVest is to empower people everywhere to take control of their personal finances so that they can afford their dreams. We believe that financial planning should not be a luxury, which is why we?ve developed an advice-driven program that is personalized to your specific financial goals and situation. Take control of your money. Join us today.

Redskins' DE Jarvis Jenkins suspended 4 games

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? Jarvis Jenkins is the eighth Washington Redskins player to receive an NFL drugs-related suspension in 22 months, sanctioned for four games without pay Friday for testing positive for a banned performance enhancing substance.

Expected to start at defensive end, Jenkins will instead miss the first four games of the regular season. He will be eligible to return to the active roster on Sept. 30, following the Week 4 game against the Oakland Raiders.

Jenkins, who was on the practice field at training camp working with the first-string unit when the suspension was announced, released a statement saying he was "shocked and confused" to learn that he had tested positive for what he called "an obscure substance." Then he addressed reporters at length following the practice, apologizing to fans, the team and his parents.

"It was a simple mistake," he said, "but I'm accepting my responsibilities like a man."

Jenkins said he takes pre-workout and recovery supplements. Every NFL player has been instructed not to take supplements that don't have an "NSF" label ? a label that means they've been certified as acceptable under an agreement between the league and players' union ? but Jenkins said he nevertheless took an over-the-counter supplement that didn't have the label.

Jenkins said he checked the ingredients of the supplement, but he learned that's not a failsafe method. In March, he was informed that he had tested positive for a substance women take for breast cancer and that has also been used by athletes in connection with steroids.

He appealed the suspension, but the league ruled against him.

"I thought I was going to get off on it, and I didn't," he said. "The NFL has strict rules. ... They tell us we're responsible for what's in our body. Obviously I'm being led as an example."

Jenkins' backup was expected to be Adam Carriker, but Carriker had a third surgery Thursday for a right knee injury and is unlikely to play this season. Chris Baker, who has been moved from nose tackle, and Kedric Golston are the leading candidates to start while Jenkins is away. Jenkins is allowed to practice during training camp and can play in preseason games.

Jenkins said the Redskins do a good job of educating players about the NFL's drug policies, but the results are debatable. Left tackle Trent Williams, tight end Fred Davis and cornerback Phillip Buchanon served four-game sanctions in 2011. Cornerback Cedric Griffin and tackle Jordan Black were docked four games last year.

Linebacker Rob Jackson, like Jenkins, is suspended for the first four games this year. Safety Tanard Jackson is serving an indefinite suspension and could be reinstated this year.

Each suspension comes with its own backstory ? Williams, Davis and Jackson were sanctioned for substance abuse, the rest for performance-enhancing drugs ? but coach Mike Shanahan acknowledged the troubling trend.

"We have emphasized it," Shanahan said. "But maybe not enough."

A second-round pick in 2011, Jenkins missed his rookie season with a right knee injury. He returned last year to start 14 games and felt primed for a breakout season.

"It's always a tough blow for your football team," Shanahan said. "Hopefully our players will learn that without the label of NSF, you can't take any supplements, because you never know what's going to be in the supplements. We'll pay the price for it. Hopefully our players will learn from it."

Defense attorney: Bradley Manning a whistleblower

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) ? U.S. Army Pfc. Bradley Manning is a whistleblower who wanted to inform the American public about the troubling things he saw in the war zone, and the soldier is willing to pay the price for giving secrets to WikiLeaks, his defense attorney said Friday.

During closing arguments, attorney David Coombs disputed what prosecutors said a day earlier, that Manning was a traitor whose only mission as an intelligence analyst was to give classified information to the anti-secrecy website and bask in the attention.

"He's not seeking attention. He saying he's willing to accept the price" for what he has done, Coombs said.

Manning, 25, is charged with 21 offenses, but the most serious is aiding the enemy. A conviction on that could land him in prison for the rest of his life.

Coombs said the prosecution cherry-picked Manning's chats with convicted computer hacker Adrian Lamo to make their case. He urged the judge to read the entire chat log to put things in context.

For example, he said the prosecution cited a line Manning wrote to Lamo: "If you had unprecedented access to classified networks, 14 hours a day, seven days a week, for eight-plus months, what would you do?"

Coombs pointed out Manning also wrote, "Hypothetical question: If you had free reign over classified networks over a long period of time, if you saw incredible things, awful things, things that belonged in the public domain and not on some server stored in a dark room in Washington, D.C., what would you do?"

Lamo turned the soldier in to authorities in May 2010.

Coombs also said Manning's chat with Lamo about Hillary Clinton and other diplomats around the world having a heart attack over what was leaked was taken out of context.

A military judge, not a jury, is hearing the case at Manning's request. Army Col. Denise Lind will deliberate after closing arguments, but it's not clear when she will rule.

Speaking for more than five hours Thursday, Maj. Ashden Fein told the judge Manning gave secrets to a group of anarchists, knowing the material would be seen by the terrorist group al-Qaida.

"WikiLeaks was merely the platform which Pfc. Manning used to ensure all the information was available for the world, including enemies of the United States," Fein said.

Coombs has said Manning was troubled by what he saw in the war ? and at the same time was struggling as a gay man in the era of "don't ask don't tell." Those struggles made him want to do something to make a difference and he hoped revealing what was going on in Iraq and Afghanistan and U.S. diplomacy would inspire debate and reform in American foreign and military policy.

A native of Crescent, Okla., Manning has acknowledged giving WikiLeaks some 700,000 battlefield reports, diplomatic cables and videos. But he says he didn't believe the information would harm troops in Afghanistan and Iraq or threaten national security.

"The amount of the documents in this case, actually is the best evidence that he was discreet in what he chose because if he was indiscriminate, if he was systematically harvesting, we wouldn't be talking about a few hundred thousand documents ? we'd be talking about millions of documents," Coombs said.

Coombs showed three snippets of video from a 2007 U.S. Apache helicopter attack Manning leaked, showing troops firing on a small crowd of men on a Baghdad sidewalk, killing at least nine men, including a Reuters news photographer and his driver. Coombs said the loss of civilian lives shocked and horrified the young soldier.

"You have to look at that from the point of view of a guy who cared about human life," Coombs said.

Prosecutors argued Manning only cared about himself. The government and Manning's attorneys also disagree on when the soldier started giving material to WikiLeaks. Prosecutors believe it was in late 2009, shortly after his deployment in Iraq began. Manning has said it started in February the following year.

The verdict and any sentence will be reviewed, and could be reduced, by the commander of the Military District of Washington, currently Maj. Gen. Jeffery S. Buchanan.

Asian shares little changed ahead of earnings

TOKYO (AP) ? Asian stocks were little changed in subdued trading Thursday morning amid worries about lagging shares on Wall Street overnight, and ahead of a slew of earnings reports in coming sessions.

The benchmark Nikkei shed 0.2 percent to 14,698.79 in morning trading. The Shanghai Composite Index slipped just under 0.1 percent to 2,032.14 in morning trading.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 0.6 percent to 21,844.08, while South Korea's Kospi fell nearly 0.2 percent to 1,908.83 in early trading.

"There is little material to move the market in either direction right now," said Masahiro Yamaguchi at Mizuho Securities Co. in Tokyo.

Market players saw earnings results were mixed in the United States, and they are taking a wait-and-see attitude on what to expect as Japanese companies begin to announce earnings this week, he said.

But, in the long term, optimism rules on a recovery in Asia, and hopes are high earnings reports will be positive, Yamaguchi said.

Japan has gotten a perk lately from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's "Abenomics" policies that have helped push the dollar higher, which helps Japanese exporters like Toyota Motor Corp. and Canon Inc.

Despite European market sentiments being boosted by strong economic figures out of Europe, U.S. markets were weighed down by a sales warning from Caterpillar, the world's largest construction equipment company.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 25 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 15,542. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index fell six points, or 0.4 percent, to 1,685.

Besides Caterpillar, earnings from AT&T also disappointed, though reports from Boeing Co., Apple and Ford Motor Co. were better than expected.

The dollar was trading at 100.1 yen and 0.7577 euro in Tokyo.

9 Reasons Content Marketing Programs Fail, and How to Ensure ...

Content marketing is gaining prominence, as marketers look for more impactful ways to connect with and engage customers. Unlike most forms of marketing, content marketing focuses less on selling, and more on communicating, informing, and educating the customer. Generating engaging content is all about knowing your audience, capturing their attention, and staying relevant?often easier said than done, which is why some content marketing strategies miss the mark.

Here are nine common mistakes in content marketing, and ways to avoid them:

You don't draw the reader in. ?Ninety percent of the battle is getting folks to the landing page or form or call-to-action,? says Paul McKeon, president of The Content Factor. ?If the teaser, headline, or abstract aren't compelling, even if the content is great it's an uphill battle.?

Do: Write catchy, compelling headlines, teasers, abstracts, and summaries. A good rule of thumb is to think about what would get you to click on a piece of content.

You don't know your numbers. ?Your board or investors wants to hear what you're doing to engage people with content?Facebook fans, blog subscribers, etc.?but, mostly, they want to hear how the content you're creating is moving your business forward,? says Mike Volpe, CMO at Hubspot. ?You should be able to easily, and readily, articulate how much it costs to create content, how it's moving the needle on your competitive landscape, lead flow, cost of customer acquisition, and customer acquisition, and you should always optimize your content approach based on those indicators each month.?

Do: Create a plan for how your content strategy will further your company's business objectives, and ?outline a baseline from which you're launching your content strategy so you can quantify impact and results over time,? Volpe advises.

You're impatient. ?Content marketing is a process, not a project,? McKeon says. ?I recently downloaded a content asset from a well-known provider of marketing automation solutions. No sooner had I clicked ?submit? than my phone rang with one of their salespeople on the line. Tongue in check, I asked if I had been ?nurtured' long enough.?

Do: Delay ?the inevitable salesperson call,? McKeon recommends. Failure to do so is likely to deter customers from engaging with your gated content in the future.

You don't promote it. Posting great content on a medium that gets little traffic is a mistake. ?Creating great content is only part of the puzzle; you have to promote it to get people to view, interact with, and share it with others,? Volpe says. ?Remarkable content will work wonders for your business, but to do so, people need to be able to find it, so ensure that you're promoting it effectively to maximize traction,? he explains.

Do: Leverage keyword trends to optimize your content for search, maintain a presence on social networks and blogs, and use co-marketing partnerships and PR to ensure your content is visible.

You don't know your audience. ?An accurate definition and prioritization of your buyer personas is critical,? says Amnon Mishor, founder of Leadspace. Often, marketers produce content without a specific audience in mind. ?Get to the job of creating content only when you have a good notion of who to target,? he adds.

Do: Analyze your existing customers. ?[Identify] who's a decision-maker and who's an influencer, and learn where key target personas are likely to congregate online,? Mishor says. Then, he says, ?model your ideal buyer profile manually, or with a social lead targeting technology.?

You don't understand your medium. ?Twitter is not the best place for your 14,000 word essay on the challenges facing your industry, nor will a meme perform well in a serious industry journal,? Volpe says. The channel your content is published or promoted on dictates the format and style of your content. Understanding the potential, as well as the limitations, of each channel is step one to creating content that doesn't ?make people [want to] hit the snooze button.?

Do: Use compelling images and infographics to ?keep your content visually appealing,? he says.

You don't share the content-creation love. ?Some of your best potential content creators may not be on your marketing team,? Volpe points out. ?Ask your founder, sales folks, services team, really anyone, who interacts with customers on a regular basis or knows your industry well for content ideas.? ?

Do: Tap into the content-creating potential of your entire team to deliver content that resonates with your leads and prospects.

You focus on the wrong company instead of the customer. ?Although it's getting better, there's still a lack of ?what's in it for me' content,? McKeon says. Too often, marketers generate content that revolves around the company and its products, and fails to provide value to the customer.

Do: ?Create prescriptive or informative content,? he says. ?One litmus test: Is the content you're sending good enough that the recipient would share it with their boss or customer?? If the answer is no, consider revising it.

You don't use data. ?One hundred percent of Americans like facts and figures, from what we can tell,? Volpe quips. Relevant stats and figures serve up information in bite-size pieces, to be consumed and shared more easily.

Do: ?Be a resource your prospects, customers, and leads turn to for data and information in a digestible format,? Volpe says. ?And make sure you tweet relevant stats, as well?they are highly shareable.?

Former Edmond church worker gets deferred sentence, jail time for embezzlement

Bill Dwight Coyle will spend 90 days in the Oklahoma County jail as part of his punishment for embezzling more than $58,000 from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edmond.

Coyle, a former business manager at the church, also received a 10-year deferred sentence and 500 hours of community service from District Judge Kenneth C. Watson on Monday.

Coyle, 62, of Edmond, pleaded guilty Friday to eight counts of violating the state's computer crimes act because he used a computer to make unauthorized purchases with a church-issued credit card.

Among the 880 items Coyle bought from the website Amazon with church money were a gun holster, a grenade pouch and a survival guide, records show.

Coyle has paid back $92,600 in restitution, including the cost of a church audit, his attorney said.

The judge gave Coyle the weekend to decide between a deferred sentence with jail time and a five-year suspended sentence without jail time plus 250 hours of community service.

A deferred sentence is not a conviction if the conditions of the sentence are met. A suspended sentence is a conviction.

Coyle has until July 29 to surrender to authorities, his attorney said.
